Duke’s Mayo Bowl Predictions

The big news in this one is that head coaches Mack Brown and Shane Beamer have agreed to be doused with mayonnaise if their team wins the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. We can’t think of a more disgusting celebration but assume both schools will want to win anyway, especially since the winner gets to finish the season with a 7-6 record and the loser will finish 2021 with a sub-.500 record.

This will be Beamer’s first matchup as Gamecocks head coach against the Tar Heels, while Brown didn’t have much success in his first stint as UNC head coach, losing three matchups before winning in ’91 and coming back to end another three-game losing streak in the series with a 24-20 win in 2019. This game will be played in Charlotte, where the schools have also agreed to get together again in 2023 for the 59th matchup between the schools.

UNC will have Sam Howell in place to run the offense, which is interesting since his first start came against South Carolina in Bank of America Stadium a few years ago. Since taking over in Chapel Hill, Howell has thrown for 10,039 yards, the most in college football, and has also thrown 91 touchdown passes that ranks No. 1 as well. South Carolina’s defense will have to be wary of both his arm and his legs since he’s become a true dual threat in his final season, rushing for 825 yards and 11 scores.

Duke's Mayo Bowl Analysis

Brown has had his offensive line and defensive line practicing against one another at full speed in the lead up to this contest as they try to improve their pass protection after surrendering 45 sacks, which ranked 127th nationally and contributed to the team’s struggles.

South Carolina will have Oklahoma transfer Spencer Rattler and a pair of four-star freshmen vying for the starting quarterback job in Columbia next season but will be short-handed for this contest with Luke Doty still recovering from surgery and another transferring.

Zeb Noland, who was originally supposed to be an assistant coach this season, will make his sixth start. His familiarity with the system certainly helps the offense go but he lacks the playmaking prowess Howell brings to the table. That should be the difference in leading to Brown getting a celebratory mayonnaise bath at game’s end. Lay the points. Play North Carolina.
