ECU College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

One year after going 8-5, East Carolina dropped to 2-10, and 1-10 vs. lined teams.  At 24-34 overall, ascending coach Mike Houston is now on the hot seat at ECU.

2024 ECU NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

Offensively, the run game tanked (5.3 to 3.5), accuracy died (63.7 to 53.6), sacks allowed went up (17 to 33) and turnovers increased (+13 to -5). 

Two transfer QB’s compete for the job, and accuracy should improve.  With a slightly improved OL, the run game should improve.  A new coordinator who prepped at Mississippi is on board.  Defensively, the run D was spectacular in ’22 and ’23. 

It looks as good now.  The pass defense actually improved in ’23.  With a stout DL, it should still be sufficient.  Sacks dropped from 29 to 18.  It should improve. 

ECU Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

It’s up to the new coordinator to get this right offensively.  I show 7-5.  East Carolina was 1-7 in AAC play, but with a 120-165 point ratio.  Given the easier schedule, this better be a bowl season.

2024 ECU Football Schedule and Games to Watch

Michigan is off the schedule, as are Tulane and SMU (new conference).  That’s three extra win opportunities.  Games 3-5 are home with revenge vs. App St, at Liberty and home to UTSA.  They might be underdogs all three games, but one upset gets them to 3-2 overall. 

The Charlotte game is winnable, but tricky.  East Carolina plays Army and Navy this year.  That helps in preparation, and the Army game is with rest.  November features a host of FAU (22-7 road win their best game last year), at Tulsa (last play field goal loss), at North Texas, and home to Navy.  If they return to form, 3-1 could be the outcome for ECU.

Mike Houston has seen his team go 14-7 ATS as a road dog (3-3 in a bad season last year).  The offensive stat sheet will determine if I can trust them this season in that role.
