Florida Atlantic College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Prior to ’23, Tom Herman was 54-22 in his six-year coaching tenure, with no losing seasons and a 5-0 bowl mark (did not coach in one bowl game).  It turns out he wasn’t a miracle worker, and 4-8 was a disappointment.  The AAC is a mediocre conference.  More should be expected of Herman and the Owls this year. 

2024 Florida Atlantic NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

16 returning starters didn’t help last year as the run game, pass protection and pass defense got worse.  The portal wasn’t kind, and my accurate count is seven returning starters this year.  Cam Fancher is the new QB.  He hit 65%, but with a porous 11-11 ratio. 

The RB room is barren.  They may go RB by committee.  Will a feature RB emerge?  One WR caught 108 passes.  He’s gone, as is most everyone else.  The OL returns one starter.  I have fewer notes defensively. 

While six starters left, the biggest hit came at edge rusher.  This unit may not excite, but on paper it could be similar to ’23.  I could kick better than what they showed last year.  FAU hopes their ’22 PK returns from injury to claim the job (9-13, but not a big leg).

Here’s the recipe for 8-4.  Reduce QB turnovers.  Find a feature RB.  Reduce sacks allowed.  Coach up the PK.  I’m calling it as low as 4-5, but a possible 7-5 ending if they sweep games vs. the perceived bottom of the AAC.  If the keys fail, FAU will disappoint once again.  .

2024 Florida Atlantic Football Schedule and Games to Watch

Clemson and Illinois are off the schedule, replaced by rebuilding Michigan St and UConn.  Army, FIU and Wagner all visit in weeks 1-5.  Even if those teams are improved, 3-0 needs to be the result for confidence reasons.  FAU has a higher ending Power # as compared to UConn (road game) and the same Power # as visiting North Texas.  If Herman has the same coaching skill set that he had prior to this job, FAU should be 4-2 before heading to UTSA (tough one). 

USF had an amazing ’23 turnaround, yet FAU destroyed them at their place, 56-14.  East Carolina regressed, yet two weeks later they beat FAU 22-7.  Will we see more erratic performances in ’24?  Games 10-12 are at Temple, home to Charlotte, and at Tulsa, teams that were a combined 7-26 in lined games, and picked at the very bottom of the AAC this year.  Again, no excuses this season.
