FAU Football Preview 2023: Florida Atlantic Picks for Betting

Tom Herman was 54-22 in his six-year coaching tenure, with no losing seasons and a 5-0 bowl mark (did not coach in one bowl game).  He’s back, and that could be bad news for the rest of the AAC.

Florida Atlantic Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

16 starters return.  They lose a QB who threw only five interceptions, but gain a transfer with promise.  I like the rest of the offense but with a new staff it’s always best to check early for variance.  Seven of the top eight tacklers also return.  The (adjusted for sacks) run defense was high at 5.05 a year ago.  I’m not 100% sure it comes down, so that’s another watch area.

FAU 2023 Predictions, Florida Atlantic Schedule:

The schedule will be a bit tougher, and at 1^st glance, it’s also a bit tricky. 

Ohio U was solid last year (10-4) and likely will be again.  They beat FAU 41-38 last year, with the rematch now at FAU’s place.  That’s a good barometer, but games at Clemson and at Illinois appear too tough this season with a new QB at the helm. 

USF hosts FAU with their new staff.  I show FAU as the (current) better team, and a loss here would mean to me that the Owls are going through roster transformation for the new staff and are taking a step back.  The AAC road schedule might find them favorite in all four games.  Later, critical home games are vs. EC and Tulane. 

All in all, there’s plenty of roster and coaching upheaval in this league, but FAU’s toughest games are vs. three schools in stable situations.  Can home field help (estimated 20K attendance)?

Florida Atlantic Football Bottom Line:

5-3 or 6-2 not counting home games vs. UTSA, ECU and Tulane, plus the finale at Rice.  This initially looked like a 7-5 ceiling, but I could see 8-4 as a possibility as long as QB play is above the norm, turnovers are not an issue, and the veteran defense doesn’t regress with the coaching changes.  Stay tuned.

Florida Atlantic Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

A win vs. Ohio will have me thinking bullish after they get through with the non-conference schedule.  A loss in that game means I will need more data points.  I’ll watch QB play, the turnover ratio and the run defense closely.
