Florida Gators College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

I wrote here in ‘22 that Billy Napier was an outstanding hire. I also added the following: How long will his honeymoon period be?  Guess what?  The honeymoon is over.  That’s how it works in the State of Florida, and in the SEC.  

2024 Florida NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

QB Mertz is highly accurate, but in ’23 he was sack prone.  The offense lost one of their RB’s, their top WR and two OL, but I have all the projections on par with ’23. 

Will the run D improve (5.3-164 in ’23)?  The returning DT’s weigh over 380 pounds, combined!  Maybe they can mask holes in the LB group, which is very raw.  I have the pass D% flat (59.5%) but they need to intercept more than three passes.  The kicking game looks solid, but new returners must be found.

6-6.  That requires a 4-1 start, a split of at Tennessee/host of Kentucky, and one win as an underdog in their final five games.  To achieve more, the pass protection has to improve, and the defense has to either overachieve vs. the run, and/or force more turnovers.

2024 Florida Football Schedule and Games to Watch

’24 PREVIEW:

This is a tale of two seasons.  Season one includes game 1-7.  Florida MUST show progress by winning at Mississippi St and their new staff, and winning hosting Kentucky (20-2 at home, but lost in ’22, and has won just once overall the past four years). 

A split of the following four games could mean 5-2.  These games are the opener hosting MFla (tossup), home to Texas A&M and their new staff, home to UCF (Florida is rested, and seeking revenge for an embarrassing ’21 bowl loss, but with a different staff) and at Tennessee (I’ll precheck both defenses). 

Season #2 represents the toughest set of games I have ever seen.  It starts with the neutral game vs. Georgia, continues at top five team Texas, moves to a host of LSU, a likely top 15 team who is 2-0 easily vs. Napier, features another home game, this vs. presumed top ten opponent Mississippi, and concludes at solid Florida St.  On paper, this looks 1-4, and it could be 0-5. 

Florida Gators 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

I recommended a 60-40 or 65-35 vs. portfolio last year, which did work.  Napier has had spread success in road games.  He also catches LSU this year off their emotional game vs. Alabama.  Those are decent looks, but otherwise I may still fade them if the stat sheet does not improve
