Florida Gators Football 2022 Season in Review
Number 4 overall NFL draft pick Anthony Richardson could only lead the Gators to a 6-6 regular season record while sitting out the team’s blowout loss in the Las Vegas Bowl to Oregon State.
The season started strong with a top 10 home win over Utah but things faded fast and ultimately the Gators closed out the regular season going 2-4 including losses at Vanderbilt and at rival Florida State, both by single digits.
Of the Gators six regular season losses, five of them were by 10 points or less with the only blowout loss coming at Georgia 42-20.
It was Billy Napier’s first year as head coach for the Gators as they look to replace Richardson and top lineman O’Cyrus Torrence who was also drafted into the NFL. What does the 2023 season have in store for the Gators football team?
Changes Made For 2023 Florida Gators Football Team
It looks like it will be Wisconsin transfer Graham Mertz starting at quarterback to at least start the 2023 season, but he doesn’t have the throwing ability or athleticism that Richardson possessed while he was at Florida.
What Mertz does have is a quick learning ability as he’s already locked into Napier’s offensive game plan heading in.
Florida had one of their worst defensive showings in 2022 allowing 28.8 ppg which was third worst in the SEC and were 4th worst in both passing and rushing yards given up per game as well.
Those look to be fixed up by new defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong and seven incoming transfers among linemen and linebackers.
Florida had the 5th best recruiting class among the competitive SEC which includes defensive standouts as well that should contribute to the improvement.
2023 Florida Gators Football Schedule Outlook
Florida’s non-conference schedule is a bit lighter this season but open up at Utah in which they were #7 to open the 2022 season when the Gators beat them.
The Utes will be out for revenge in 2023 as this season’s game will be played in Salt Lake City. The non-conference schedule is rounded out by FCS McNeese, Charlotte and Florida State to end the season.
They should go 2-2 at the very minimum in those games. Florida’s SEC home games consist of Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Georgia and Arkansas.
They should be able to rack up two wins in those games as well with road contests consist of Kentucky, South Carolina, LSU and Missouri.
It will be tough be I see Florida picking up wins against Missouri and Kentucky here which gives them another 6-6 regular season record.
