2023 Results and Betting Trends
Florida State finished the regular season unbeaten before losing 63-3 against Georgia in the Orange Bowl. The Seminoles went 8-6 against the spread last season, but were only 4-5 against the number as a double-digit favorite. Georgia Tech went 7-6 straight-up last season, capped off with a bowl win over UCF as a six-point underdog. The Yellow Jackets earned five outright upset victories in 2023, including wins as a double-digit underdog against North Carolina and Miami (Fla).
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Georgia Tech has taken a unique approach to building its roster this season: Nearly the entire offense has returned to Atlanta while the defense has been completely rebuilt through the transfer portal. According to ESPN’s Bill Connelly, Georgia Tech is expected to return 83-percent of its offensive production from last season (No. 9 in the country), while only 51-percent of its defensive production has returned (No. 109).
Quarterback Haynes King accounted for 3,729 yards of total offense (2,842 passing, 737 rushing) and 37 touchdowns (27 passing, 10 rushing) in his first season as the Yellow Jackets’ starter. The only other player in the country to generate 2,800 passing yards, 700 rushing yards, 25 touchdown passes and 10 touchdown runs was the Heisman winner, Jayden Daniels.
Georgia Tech’s defense was one of the worst among Power Five teams last season, and head coach Brent Key has dipped into the transfer portal to take a swing at a big one-year upgrade. Upwards of nine transfers – ranging from Penn State and Georgia all the way to Rhode Island – are expected to see the field on defense.
Florida State Seminoles
Speaking of transfers, things are going to look a little different in Tallahassee after a 13-1 season last year. The Seminoles were unbeaten ACC champs, but were still left out of the College Football Playoff after a swarm of late-season injuries.
Florida State ranks outside of the top-80 in both offensive and defensive returning production. Transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei will be on his third team in three years as he replaces Jordan Travis at the helm.
Florida State vs Georgia Tech Prediction
Our favorite play in this contest is going to be on Georgia Tech’s team total over 22-23 points. Last season, the Yellow Jackets scored at least 21 points in every game, and that schedule included Louisville, Ole Miss, Miami (Fla), Clemson and Georgia. The four previous games at Aviva Stadium have seen an average of 48.8 points per game, so scoring conditions have not been an issue at the non-traditional venue.
If you don’t have that team total available at your ‘book, we are comfortable backing Georgia Tech plus the points. Florida State’s revamped offense will be able to score against this Yellow Jackets’ defense, but Georgia Tech’s offense is good enough to keep this one within a couple scores. Recommended Play: Georgia Tech Team Total Over 22.5 / Georgia Tech +10.5.
