Kalen Deboer took over in 2020 when Jeff Tedford had to resign due to health issues. 

He left for Washington after going 10-3.  Medically improved, Tedford returned last year, which caused veteran QB Haener to return to the Bulldogs.  The start was slow (1-4) but the finish was electric (9-0).  Fresno can’t be taken for granted in 2023.

Fresno State Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Mikey Keene comes over from UCF to replace the graduated Haener.  They’ll be a bit of a drop, with turnovers my key concern as Haener threw just three interceptions! 

A 1,370 yard RB is gone.  I like the OL, but another drop is expected.  The top three pass catchers (207-2,561) are gone.  So is the offensive coordinator, as Kirby Moore left for Missouri.  T

he WR coach is now in charge.  Fewer changes exist defensively, but their top DL (11.5 sacks) and 44 starts from the secondary must be replaced.  I show the run defense as improved, but not the pass defensive percentage, although it still should be in the league’s upper echelon

Fresno State 2023 Predictions, Fresno State Schedule:

Fresno drops USC, but does have road games at Purdue and ASU.  Both teams sport new coaches, and so even with the loss of some key players, a split is quite possible. 

The Bulldogs could be 4-1 heading to Wyoming, a decent opponent who Fresno has outscored 74-3 in their last three meetings (30-0 last year).  November brings three additional challenges.  They host revenge-minded Boise, travel to a rested SJ St, and close at SD St, who “might” remember last year’s miracle loss in a game SD St absolutely gave away.

Fresno State Football Bottom Line: Total Wins

“Just” 8-4?  The conference schedule is a bit tricky, and the early non-conference road games might be as well with some of their better players gone from a year ago.  I won’t count Tedford out, but the team may come up short of another title game appearance.
