Punching Above their Weight
These two teams haven’t played since a four-game set in 1999-2003 where the home team won and covered all four. Fresno has historically been a winning play when facing Pac-12 competition, covering the spread in 60-percent of their games against “big brother” competition dating back to the last century. That includes a run of six-straight point spread covers against the Pac-12, which the Bulldogs are currently on.
Opening Night Blowout
Oregon State is off a resounding dismissal of Boise State, as the Beavers took a 34-17 decision while out-gaining the Broncos 470-311 and holding them to 4.9 yards per pass. Boise State (+3) was our top selection last week, and unfortunately for us, that game was over from the opening kickoff. The Broncos committed four turnovers in the first half, essentially handing the game to the Beavers. How much of that can be attributed to Oregon State’s defense, and how much of that was a result of Boise State’s incompetence?
Easy Beginnings
Fresno had similar results with an inferior foe, beating Cal Poly 35-7 as RB Jordan Mims and Nikko Remigio softened up the Mustangs with three rushing touchdowns and the game was essentially over before anyone noticed QB Jake Haener had completed 36-of-42 passes for 377 yards and two touchdowns of his own. Things likely won’t go that easily this week against a veteran Beaver defense that has nine starters back from a unit that allowed the fewest points and yards than any Oregon State team since 2012.
Fresno State vs Oregon State Prediction
We (painfully) watched almost every snap from last week’s Oregon State vs Boise State game. As much as we’d love to give the Beavers credit for that dominating performance, the majority of that result has to be pinned on Boise State. The Broncos didn’t exactly impress on Friday night against New Mexico, gaining just 318 yards and going 4-for-15 against a Lobos squad that went 3-9 last year.
Fresno head coach Jeff Tedford appears to have regained the touch he had to start his first go-round with the club after going 10-3 with the Bulldogs last season. Oregon State has certainly made strides over the last few seasons, but let’s not forget that the Beavers are 5-16 straight-up on the road under head coach Jonathan Smith. So in a game that’s lined as a pick’em where we just have to pick the winner, we’ll gladly lean toward Fresno State.
