Frisco Bowl Analysis

San Diego State is rearing for another bowl opportunity, they had their streak of 10 straight bowl games snapped last year and now Brady Hoke looks to bring his bowl record back to .500, which is currently sitting at 2-3.

UTSA is coming into this game on a hot streak, riding a 5-1 ATS run away from home and putting up plenty of points. Although, UTSA played one of the easier schedules, sitting at the #120 spot in strength of schedule. UTSA is coming into this game 0-2 SU & ATS in their bowl games, while also putting up just a 2-7 ATS record off a upset W as a dog. Bowl teams coming in off an upset win in a championship game are 12-4 ATS in the L16, but UTSA hasn’t had as much luck off that upset win.

Statistically, UTSA probably comes into this game with the edge, San Diego State is averaging just 330.9 YPG of offense, which is the 3rd lowest of any bowl team. In the L8 games they have been out-gained by 40 YPG, San Diego State has relied on their rush game, putting up 175 YPG on 4.28 YPC.

When it comes to the passing game, San Diego State is sitting at #121 putting up just 155.2 YPG through the air. Their strength lies in the defense, they are #17 in the FBS, allowing just 19.5 PPG, on top of being the #2 team in the country against the run, allowing under 80 YPG on the ground! San Diego State is #16 in YPG allowed, and even though they are allowing 242 YPG through the air, they sit at #11 allowing just 6.2 yards per pass attempt. All together this defense is holding opponents 57 yards under their season average.

Where the strengths of UTSA lie is with their offense. They are #12 in the country in PPG, putting up almost 38 points per game. They are sitting as the #37 team in rushing yards, putting up 188.3 YPG, while they are #12 through the air, with a whopping 311 yards per game, through the air alone. This Roadrunners offense is posting over 470 yards per game, which has been the driving force that has kept them in games.

UTSA has struggled against the pass on the defensive side of the ball, sitting outside the top-100 teams, allowing 252 YPG through the air. While that isn’t San Diego State’s strengths, it does turn into a big opportunity for the Aztecs, especially if they can avoid the turnovers, which is easier said then done against a defense that has recovered the 3rd most fumbles in the FBS.

UTSA coach Traylor has now led the team to a second straight bowl game, and we will see if this team can hold up to one of their most difficult opponents on the season. I’ll be looking toward San Diego State, whose defense has been superior while playing a noticeably harder schedule.
