Georgia Southern College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Clay Helton is 6-6 in two regular seasons, and 0-2 in bowl games. Defense has been a problem. This is year #3. Another season at 6-6 would typecast him as an average at best coach.
2024 Georgia Southern NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
Here’s four keys I listed when prepping for this writeup: 1: QB play and turnovers. I think improvement at QB is entirely possible, as QB Brin’s two-school career was marked by excessive interceptions.
Soph QB French has thrown 16 passes in his career, so he, or any of the new QB’s will need to be vetted. 2: OL play. Sacks allowed went from just 7 to 34 last year. There’s only modest returning talent, but there is a new OL coach. 3: DL living up to expectations. They have massive returning experience and a couple of guys are on the Sun Belt preseason 1st and 2nd team list. Can the 4.55 run defense improve? 4: Better red zone performance. Last year’s PK was 17-18 inside of 40 yards. That’s too many attempts. In other observations, The RB room is really good, five of the top six tacklers return, and there will be a new PK, who shows promise, but has big shoes to fill.

7-5, but that’s dependent on (anticipated) defensive improvement. 5-7 is the floor, and right now the season win total is 5.5, with OVER +115. I’d like to see 5, but over 5.5 is something I’m taking a close look at. Anything less than a bowl bid would be an indictment on Clay Helton.

2024 Georgia Southern Football Schedule and Games to Watch
The Eagles likely lose one extra non-conference win due to the schedule bump, as I make them an underdog hosting Boise in the opener. Unfortunately, they stay on the road after playing Mississippi to face rested rival Georgia State.
This is the better team, but I don’t like the setup. Win that, and the tables turn, as they get rest and the revenge motive hosting Marshall. James Madison is weaker now. This game has to show that Georgia Southern has fixed their defense. This team is 3-9 SU in road games under Helton. They will be favored at ODU and South Alabama. Shouldn’t they win both games?
I’ll precheck Troy on the road prior to that matchup. Georgia Southern closes at Coastal and home to Appalachian St.
Georgia Southern 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
A win at Georgia State likely has me in play on mode vs. Marshall on 10/12. With defensive improvement (and reduced turnovers), I hope for a 2-1 play on ratio in their games.
