Georgia State College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Shawn Elliott achieved 6-6 (thanks) in ’23, and then won their bowl game.  The rigors of coaching however, weighed on him, so citing wanting to be closer to his family, Elliott resigned in mid-February.  Del McGee arrives from Georgia (run game coordinator) with a stout recruiting resume.  Is he ready to lead this team in ’24?

2024 Georgia State NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

McGee did a nice job filling out his staff on short notice.  Jim Chaney (offense) has nearly 40 years of experience at schools such as Georgia and Tennessee. 

Kevin Sherrer (defense) also has coached in the SEC, and the NFL.  The team itself may be a bit down.  QB accuracy will clearly be reduced.  The Pittsburgh transfer needs to reduce interceptions.  There’s “potential” at RB, but they lost a stud at that position (1,350 rushing, 13 TD’s).  A WR with NFL possibilities is gone. 

Four fulltime OL starters are gone.  With the late (extremely late) start in recruiting, the offense will regress.  It’s not perfect, but there are fewer holes defensively.  Four transfers from Power Five schools (30 total career tackles) are projected to start in the front seven.  That bears watching.  Two returning DB’s are considered among the best in the conference. 

The Panthers allowed 65.5% passing a year ago, but had a solid 30 defensive sacks.  There’s much to watch early in ’24.  
 
 

Georgia State Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

I jumped in early, going UNDER 4.5 wins, based on the late hire and my 1st pass through on the schedule.  I’m having some 2nd thoughts, as a deeper dive shows some good coaching hires, potentially good defensive acquisitions, and an early schedule that is more in their favor than 1st thought.  I’m not sure how fast the staff can acclimate, but a 3-2 start now seems realistic.  5-7 is in play, but I’ll still say its 60-40 the record is 4-8 (schedule grid says 4-8).  I’ll be checking the stat sheet early and often.

2024 Georgia State Football Schedule and Games to Watch

Georgia Tech replaces LSU on the schedule.  That is a road game, but Tech will have just played FSU in Dublin, so that could make things interesting (DC Sherrer coached at Tech last year). 

Vandy has to come to Atlanta.  With a bye week before Georgia Southern, and immediately after that game, the staff can catch up on things and reset for the final seven games.  If ready, this pace is a perk. 

Unfortunately, after hosting ODU (another win shot), Georgia State plays four in a row on the road.  Given the opponents, 1-3 is the ceiling, and 0-4 is very much in play.  They host Arkansas St, a team I show as improved, and in the finale, host Coastal.  One or both of those games might be critical to achieving bowl eligibility.  

Georgia State 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

I am 13-2 ATS the past five seasons, and 3-1 in their bowl games.  I may back them vs. Georgia Tech on 8/31, and then use those results to guide me (a bad showing vs. Tech off playing at Ireland could mean they are not ready).  We’ll see how the brutal road stretch goes as I monitor their fatigue and player health.
