Houston vs Tulsa Betting Analysis
The Cougars are playing some of their best football at the end of the season, but is it too little too late for Dana Holgorsen’s crew? WagerTalk college football handicapper Kevin Dolan breaks down this weekend’s Houston vs Tulsa matchup.
The Golden Hurricane has won just two of its last eight games. Tulsa was able to avoid a spot at the bottom of the AAC table by narrowly beating last-place South Florida last weekend, 48-42.
Houston, meanwhile, has won five of its last six games overall and still has a path, albeit a long-shot one, into the AAC Championship Game this season. Coach Holgorsen’s crew will no doubt be focused to continue their red-hot run into Saturday’s matchup with Tulsa.
Houston owns the 26-19 series advantage over Tulsa, winning six of the last seven meetings between these squads.
Tulsa Finds Success On The Ground
Tulsa ran for 271 yards last week against South Florida and a big part of that success was RB Deneric Prince, who averaged an explosive 8.5 yards per carry and two touchdowns in that game.
That kind of performance isn’t something new to the Texas native this season as he ranks as one of only five players in the entire FBS this year to put up multiple 200+ yard rushing games.
Houston Tightening Up As Season Wears On
After starting the year off slow and winning just two of their opening five contests, the Houston Cougars have since tightened up and become one of the hottest teams in the country over the second half of the season.
A large part of Houston’s early issues were on the offensive line where the Cougars were allowing an average of 2.6 sacks per game over their first five starts. Since then, however, the Cougars have allowed just one sack per game on average over their last six starts with the defense continuing to improve also.
Houston vs Tulsa Prediction
While we’ve been impressed with Houston in their last few games, we believe this number is just a little too high here on Saturday and we’re happy to side with the road underdog in this spot.
Tulsa has shown they’re capable of some explosive rushing performances this year, putting up 200+ yards in three games already this season against Ole Miss, Temple, and South Florida respectively.
The Golden Hurricane’s rushing attack should find success against a Cougars’ defense that ranks 71st in the nation this year in opponent yards per rush, giving up 4.2 yards per attempt after allowing 5.4 yards per carry last week against East Carolina.
Take the points with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Saturday to cover on the road against the Houston Cougars in the American Athletic Conference.
Prediction: Tulsa Golden Hurricane +12
