These two schools may be “bluebloods” on the basketball court, but the football programs have met only five times and Illinois’ last visit to Lawrence was in 1892.

Needless to say, there’s probably not a lot of actionable info we can gather from that one. The last time the Jayhawks and Illini met on the gridiron was in 1968.

Expectations were high in Champaign entering this season, but Illinois’ performance in Week 1 against Toledo left the blue-and-orange feeling…just blue.

The Fighting Illini escaped with a 30-28 victory on a last-second field goal, but Illinois never looked like a team that was a 9.5-point favorite in that contest, and got out-gained by 42 yards and had seven fewer first downs.

Illinois was trailing 19-7 before a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown sparked a second half rally.

Kansas Football Preview

Kansas got a nice test from FCS-level Missouri State before pulling away for a comfortable victory. Starting QB Jalon Daniels did not play (back), but backup Jason Bean has seen plenty of playing time in his college career and threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Jayhawks’ defensive coordinator Brian Borland also missed the game because of a medical procedure. Daniels has returned to practice this week and is expected to return against the Illini, and that is reflected in the point spread with the Jayhawks opening as a 3-point home favorite over the visitors from the Big Ten.

Kansas played on Friday last week, so the Jayhawks have had some extra time to prepare. They also played an FCS opponent and were able to rest their starting quarterback while Illinois needed a last-second field goal to beat a MAC team.

There are plenty of intangibles pointing in Kansas’ favor. The Jayhawks have covered the spread in each of their last three games against Big Ten opposition.

Illinois has failed to cover the spread in their last four road openers.
