Indiana College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
In ’19 and ’20 Indiana went 14-5 in the regular season. They went 9-27 since then, and 3-24 in Big 10 play. Curt Cignetti might just be a splash hire.
Highly confident (yes, I watched many of his recent interviews), he basically has the slogan, “we win, join us”! I’ve always wondered why football here never has taken hold.
2024 Indiana NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
The James Madison to the Big Ten experiment is underway. The key staff members came with Cignetti. At least ten players, nine of the slated to start, are from James Madison.
That’s telling in two ways. 1st, Indiana talent was weak. 2nd, the staff believes these players are capable of making the (big) leap to a Power 2 conference. QB Rourke comes from Ohio U. His #’s are impressive and he is an upgrade.
Indiana has never had a solid run game, at least since ’18. I can’t make my projection very high, but I will chart the newcomers to see if I am too low on them. The OL coach here remains. Is that a good thing? I’m also keeping the defensive #’s flat (4.5 run D, 61.5% pass D). Perhaps coaching will elevate things, but Tom Allen was defensive minded.
Four transfers start on the DL, and two more at LB and DB. The experiment continues. Two kickers compete to replace a guy who was average at his craft.
In addition to charting basically EVERYTHING, I’d like to see the pass pressure ramp up. The James Madison pass rush was strong. One more thought: Cignetti said on more than one occasion that team speed is his biggest worry. Could that mean ’24 is a bridge/learning year?
Indiana Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
A soft 6-6? I went OVER 5 wins (5.5 at +130 was available, but there’s been action on Indiana lately), knowing that it’s more conjecture than solid stat sheet facts at this point.
The comment about team speed worries me, but despite the conference differences, I think Indiana has upgraded the roster in the transfer portal.
Chemistry can be hard to achieve early, so let’s hope the low quality of the September opponents helps in that regard.

Indiana 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
My 1st look again will be the dog in their games. My three keys listed above are incredibly important for
Opponents are 50-23 ATS when a rush pick vs. Indiana (8-2 last three years).
I’ll keep using that as a guide, and for balance, especially with this easy early schedule, coupled with the new coach data which works well. If all goes according to plan, a play on spot could include 9/28 vs. Maryland.
2024 Indiana Football Schedule and Games to Watch!
Expectations are a 2-0 start before Indiana hits the road to go to UCLA. I know it’s early, with massive roster change, but is it fair for me to have them 3-0 in non-conference play vs. FIU, 0-22 Western Illinois and Charlotte, all home games?
Games 5-6 are hosting Maryland (killed in ’23, close game history at home) and at a rested Northwestern. 3-3 would tell me that this program needs time. 4-2 is possible. A rested Indiana next hosts Nebraska and Washington.
My Indiana prechecks are the rush ratio, pass pressure, and the kicking game. I’m curious how the young Nebraska QB looks, and how the young Washington team is faring on the road. Indiana was 2-14 SU the last three seasons on the road.
They play at Michigan State on 11/2. The next winnable game is the finale, vs. Purdue. The favorite in that series is 17-2 SU. Both teams are hoping for ’24 respectability. Long season for the Hoosiers, or excitement? Which is in play?
