Indiana Hoosiers Football Preview 2023: Indiana Hoosiers Picks for Betting

In 2019 and 2020 Indiana went 14-5 in the regular season.  They are 6-18 since then, and 2-16 in Big 10 play.  Tom Allen has a critical 2023 season ahead of him.

Indiana Hoosiers Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Only eight starters return.  QB play in September will be a must watch.  I’m not a big fan of coordinator Walt Bell (too used to coaching on losing teams), but I do like taking Wisconsin’s OL coach. 

I don’t have a high projection for their run game (3.6), so let’s see if they can outperform my expectations.  I am worried about their pass protection. 

Just about every meaningful player departs from the defense.  Five transfers are slated to start, but only one comes from a high-level defense, and many of the five have never started a game.  With such turnover, putting up projections isn’t easy, but it IS necessary so that I can get a baseline on whether a team is over or under performing. 

My numbers are 4.85 for the run defense and 65% for the pass defense.  In total, 30 seniors (and over 40 letterman) are gone.  They’ll also be breaking in a frosh PK.  He’s highly touted, but of course this is another must watch.

Indiana Hoosiers 2023 Predictions, Indiana Hoosiers Schedule:

Indiana opens with Ohio St, and then 2-9 Indiana St.  Lose that second game and the season is over.  The game vs. the new staff at Louisville is in Indy. 

It may seem strange to call this their most important game, but they can get to 3-1 with a win here and home vs. Akron.  Are they too young and too new a roster to be trusted? 

I don’t see many win opportunities in Big 10 play.  Hosting Rutgers gives them hope, but Indiana is at a historical situational disadvantage (9-24 ATS). 

Wisky has a new staff and will be off an emotional game vs. Ohio St but I don’t see a straight-up home win vs. their experienced roster. 

Illinois tapered off late in 2022 and has some roster losses but they have home revenge.  The Hoosiers are 2-7 hosting Michigan St and have a couple additional situational issues, but what if the Spartans have their own issues this season.  The finale is at Purdue and their new coaching staff (1-7 lately at their place).

Indiana Hoosiers Football Bottom Line:

I believe Tom Allen has many solid attributes but this is a very new and raw team, and straight-up wins might be hard to come by. 

Watch my numbers closely, and also their kicking game.  3-9 looks about right.  Does Allen get to coach in 2024?  If they don’t completely give up, I think he should get one more opportunity.

Indiana Hoosiers Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

Opponents are 47-22 ATS when a rush pick vs. Indiana (4-1 last two years year). 

I’ll keep using that as a guide.  A loss to Indiana State or Akron would sour me on them.  They could sneak up ATS on a few teams coming off emotional games, but blowout losses are a real concern.
