Kansas Jayhawks Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Amazingly, Kansas ran 5.95 per carry in 2022.  The offense is loaded again this year, and similar number are projected. 

Things weren’t as rosy defensively.  The Jayhawks exceeded my 5.15 expectation (6.25 in 2021, 4.85-201 in 2022), but that, and a nearly 65% pass defense percentage held them back in the win column.  Counting the bowl loss, KU allowed 35 or more points in seven of their final eight contests. 

While LB and DB depth has improved, the DL will have four new starters.  I can’t predict further improvement vs. the run.  Kicking was suspect last year.  This year a good PK from Texas State is slated to start, and in a pleasant surprise, the son of legendary Kansas State coach Bill Snyder has been added as an assistant coach.

Kansas Jayhawks 2023 Predictions, Kansas Football Schedule:

A 3-1 start is possible if they go 2-1 hosting Illinois, playing at lower-level Nevada, and hosting new Big 12 member BYU. 

One critical game is 10/7, a host of run-oriented UCF.  With some run defense concerns, Kansas probably needs to outscore the Knights. 

I don’t expect a repeat of the stunning 37-16 win over Oklahoma State, especially with revenge taking place on the road (horrible history there). 

The Oklahoma host might be interesting, especially if the Sooners still have defensive issues.  Kansas can’t afford to get too hyped up however, as past history shows them falling flat after facing the Sooners, including a loss a year ago. 

Kansas lost on the road to Texas Tech and Kansas State a year ago.  If strides are made, this should be at least a split, but Kansas St has owned Kansas quite a long time. 

My concern with the finale at Cincy is that KU will again be in letdown mode (win or lose) after facing their bitter in-state rival.

Kansas Jayhawks Football Bottom Line:

It’s okay to say that some past history is not important when looking at how good this coaching staff is.  Couple that with lots of returning talent and experience and at the very least we should expect another bowl appearance. 

It’s not the opponents that bother me as much as when the opponents appear on the schedule.  I hate to call this just 6-6, but that’s what it looks like unless the defense outperforms my expectations, and the team avoids letdowns in spots where a letdown might typically happen. 

Regardless, Leipold and the Jayhawks are clearly on the right track.

The rush stat formula works quite well when going against Kansas, to the tune of 42-13 vs. the spread.  Under Leipold, the stat sheet has improved so much that only once have they been a “play against team” (they lost).
