LSU Football Predictions: Strengths, Weaknesses, Improvements, Declines

The 1st order of business is fixing the 25-45 sack ratio. The OL looks improved, and QB Daniels is in year #2 of the system.

I expect the offensive number’s will remain stout, and possibly improve. Only four or five players return defensively (be VERY careful what you read in magazines).

Three transfers with a combined 83 starts at Power Five schools (Texas, Oregon St, Syracuse) are ready to assume starting roles.

My stat sheet doesn’t show much, if any defensive improvement, but part of the reason is the caliber of opponents faced. Kelly isn’t one to be patient when things do not work out. A new special team coach is already in place.

LSU Football Schedule: Which Games Will They Win?

LSU lost to FSU 24-23 a year ago, just missing after a strong comeback attempt. The rematch is in Orlando and both teams look good. LSU won a close game vs. Arkansas a year ago.

This one’s at LSU, where they lost just once in Kelly’s initial season. Road games at Ole Miss and Missouri are interesting. Can LSU’s defense rise to the test?

A split here could mean 4-1 in SEC play heading to Alabama as long as LSU takes care of business at Miss St. and home to Auburn. LSU beat Florida at their place a year ago.

This could be another home win if Florida’s defense and/or pass attack has not improved. LSU closes with a host of Texas A&M. A&M had a rough ’22 but won 38-23 at home a year ago.

LSU Football Bottom Line: Total Wins Expected Expert Pick

Kelly took this job, leaving ND solely because he could recruit to lower standards at this school. He won ten games (9-3 regular season) in a transition year, so there’s no reason to believe year #2 will be anything but another step up the ladder.

If the OL improves, and special team play also takes a step in the right direction then the ceiling is 11-1. The FSU game is a complete tossup. The floor seems like 9-3.

LSU Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

It’s name your score 9/9 when Kelly faces Hue Jackson and Gambling, with the only caveat being the six-day turnaround.

I might lean Arkansas 9/23, depending on how quickly the LSU defensive transfers are progressing. LSU is 24-7 ATS in lined non-conference games of -24 or more. I’ll lean their way vs. Army on 10/21.
