LSU College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

No one changes coaches more often than Brian Kelly.  All three coordinators are new, despite a 10-3 season with losses only to Florida St (neutral), and at Mississippi and Alabama. 

The Tigers have the 12-team playoffs squarely on their minds.
  
  

2024 LSU NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

The 25-45 sack ratio from ’22 improved to 31-22.  Four OL starters return, but gone will be the Heisman QB, Jaydon Daniels, who was an elite dual threat QB. 

QB Nussmeier paid his dues, but expect the run game to return to normalcy (5.0, 6.25 a year ago) without Daniels.  Two elite WR’s are gone, but the portal saw them add enough talent to remain dangerous.  I’m not sure what the RB room will look like, but I will chart it, recording data by level of opponent and RB rotation. 

The biggest hire they made was stealing (for big $$$) Missouri’s defensive coordinator Blake Baker.  LSU allowed a whopping 33 points per game in SEC play in ’23, and the run D was often shredded.  The typically solid pass D% (mostly mid-50’s) ballooned to 63.5%, inside and outside of the SEC. 

Another great hire was adding the DL coach from Texas.  My run D projection is down to 4.35 per carry, but I will keep the pass D% above 60%.  They’ll be a new punter, but the PK is decent.  

LSU Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

Kelly is 20-7 here, and 18-6 in the regular season.  I think they can reach 8-1 prior to a dangerous game at Florida, and if the new coordinators adjust quickly, 10-2 and a playoff berth is a reasonable outcome.  I like the talent on Mississippi a bit more, but I like this schedule better.

2024 LSU Football Schedule and Games to Watch

The season starts in Las Vegas with a compelling matchup vs. USC.  LSU goes to South Carolina week three, a place they haven’t been since ’08. 

I expect wins hosting UCLA (revenge, but with the old staff) and South Alabama, with the 3rd in a row home game a good one hosting Mississippi.  That one comes with rest, and LSU has the edge.  That rest edge flips to Arkansas when they host LSU the following week. 

Rest itself is NOT an automatic handicapping tool by any means, but comes into play if the Tigers have an emotional game vs. the Rebels in what could be incredibly important for playoff purposes.  The next three games remain tough. 

They play at Texas A&M, host Alabama, and travel to bitter rival Florida (LSU on a 5-game win streak).  It’s strange to see this team close vs. Oklahoma.  That could be a “play-in” playoff game.  

 

LSU 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

I’m generally bullish this year.  I’ll consider them vs. UCLA (with a reasonable line), and back them vs. Mississippi and vs. Alabama if the Tigers are fresh off a SU win (62% category, large sample size).  Games at Arkansas and at Florida may have me in fade mode.  LSU is 26-7 ATS in lined non-conference games of -24 or more (2-0 last year).
