Maryland College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Mike Locksley is a top-notch recruiter and in addition, the transfer portal has seen even further solid gains. Three coaches were fired from my bottom five coaches list.

For the 3rd time in his career, Locksley has a spot on the list. Can he prove me wrong?

2024 Maryland Terrapins NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

Like I said above, Maryland recruits well.  The stat sheet was solid, and the run defense (3.7-136) exceeded my expectations.  They lose their QB, so NC State transfer M.J. Morris takes over. 

I’ll chart his efforts, which on paper could be close to what Taulia accomplished.  The RB unit is strong, but the OL will clearly be weaker.  Four transfers are projected to start, so line play is certainly a must watch early on!  I’m moving the run defense projection slightly up (3.9), and overall, I still have the Terrapins in decent defensive categories. 

FSU and Tennessee transfers are slated to start along the DL.  This program has no trouble attracting players from the big schools.  Kicking is average.  

Maryland Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

8-4 would be my “normal” projection, but as I always do with coaches on my bottom five list, I subtract 1-1.5 games. 

There’s no excuse not to reach 7-5, but I was proactive, going UNDER 7.5 season wins at the openers.  There are a couple of 7’s still out there, which isn’t bad.  At 6.5, it’s a fair line.  This team is talented, but not invincible

Maryland 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

I plan to fade them 2-3 times prior to that unless their QB and PK are exceeding expectations.  Maryland might be in a good play-on situation 10/12 hosting Northwestern if they beat Indiana in their previous game. 

2024 Maryland Football Schedule and Games to Watch

5-1 is a possible start, with Maryland likely a favorite all six games!

Digging deeper, UConn should be improved, but the Power # gap is large. Michigan State has to travel for the 1st time with their new staff. They go to Virginia, but beat the Cavs 42-14 a year ago. Villanova was 10-3, but that’s from the FCS. Indiana is at home, but they lost to Mayland 44-17 a year ago and has ground to make up.

Northwestern has split games at Maryland, but the Terrapins have rest and revenge (road loss last year), plus the Wildcat stat sheet from ’23 was lower than their actual record. Even games 7-8 are winnable. I will precheck USC defensively before they go to Maryland. Minny will be rested and at home, but how good are they in ’24?

Two games are winnable late. Maryland hosts Rutgers, a team they’ve excelled against. They also host Iowa. That’s a tougher game, even at home, and the experienced Hawkeyes will be rested.
