Maryland Football Bottom Line:
Good coaches find ways to win in advantageous situations like some of those noted above. 8-4 should be a MORE than realistic goal, with a proven QB, solid RB’s and WR’s, and more coaching stability than many of their opponents.
I just don’t trust this Head Coach. 7-5 is what I’ll give them, but there is certainly an opportunity to be at least a top 25 team.
Maryland Football HANDICAPPING TIP:
I’m okay going vs. Maryland if not a rush pick at Ohio St and home to Illinois. I’ll pre-check what’s going on in Nebraska, giving Maryland a shot to beat this team in transition on 11/11.
The rest will depend on OL pass protection, DL youth, and the new PK.
Maryland Football Preview 2023: Maryland Picks for Betting
Mike Locksley is a top-notch recruiter and in addition, the transfer portal has seen even further solid gains. I’ve never been a big fan of his coaching (twice appeared on my bottom five coach list) but the talent level is special and the morale is at a very high level. Just one word of caution: He’s NEVER had a winning season vs. the spread in conference play (14-24, 9-14 lately).
What’s their ceiling?

Maryland Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH
I loved the hire of offensive coordinator Dan Enos. He’s gone, but Josh Gattis is a solid replacement. QB Taulia Tagovailoa has loads of experience and is able to stretch the field. What surprised me is their 43 sacks allowed, especially with the OL intact a season ago.
They allowed 30 sacks in their final six games. Only one starter returns now, and this is one area where portal transfers are NOT part of the 2023 equation. Watch pass protection closely. The skilled players are back and dangerous. The defense has steadily improved and that’s a real solid sign.
Their top three tacklers return but the DL will be all new. Two of the newcomers come from FSU and Tennessee (but no starts).
Even with a slightly easier schedule, my projection has them weaker (4.4 per carry). Sometimes teams who lose a star at one position see a drop in production, even if the returning depth is solid. Maryland lost 1st round CB Banks. I’ll chart their weekly results but for now I have them at a decent number (59%). PK Ryland is in the NFL. Here’s another team where a PK check is in order.
Maryland 2023 Predictions, Maryland Schedule:
Given that Virginia is seemingly in free fall, a 3-0 start is likely. Want another key early Big 10 game? How about Maryland at Michigan St on 9/23? Both teams have new kickers, but Maryland has a massive QB experience edge.
Does this coaching staff take care of business? The next interesting game is a host of Illinois on 10/14. The Illini had an amazing (49.5%) pass defense last year but three DB’s were early NFL draftees.
The record “should” be 6-2 if they split these two games and win at Northwestern (Maryland rested). Most of their history (short and long term) is ugly vs. Penn State. Is this the year they make a splash?
Closing games are at Nebraska (new staff, from NFL, how’s their transition going), home to Michigan (Wolverines in Penn St/Ohio St sandwich), and at Rutgers (great recent results).
