Memphis College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Ryan Silverfield has improved as a Head Coach.  There are still a few annoyingly close games vs. inferior opponents, but the offense has been humming.  This looks like his best team yet, and that could turn into an AAC title game appearance.  

2024 Memphis NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

The 21-37 sack ratio from ’22 changed to 23-19, but it’s been a few years since the Tigers had a sufficient pass rush.  The LB coach now takes over the defense.  A veteran DL coach was brought in to try and fix the 4.5 per carry run defense, but weeks after taking the job he bolted for Michigan (awkward and confrontational moment). 

They allowed 33 points per game after week #2, and points allowed has been an issue for years.  LB is their best unit. 

There’s no issue offensively.  QB Henigan is already their all-time passing leader with nearly 11,000 yards.  Their top RB (1,152 yards, 14 TD’s) must be replaced, but Memphis has almost always produced stout RB’s.  The WR/TE unit has experience, and the OL has two AAC stars.  Kicking, and the kick return game is solid.  Memphis has also established a home identity, and is 56-12 SU the last decade.  For me, the watch areas are the pass rush and run D.  

Memphis Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

 If all goes right, Memphis could make a playoff bid challenge, but with three tough AAC road games, and at best, a slightly improved defense, I don’t see that happening.  I have this about 9-3, and 8-4 is slightly in play.  Let’s see if the Tigers can be stingier in points allowed.

2024 Memphis Football Schedule and Games to Watch

Memphis has a good history vs. Navy, which is interesting despite the run D issues.  Navy will be rested and Memphis will have just played at FSU.  This 2nd road game is tricky.  Win that, and the Tigers will be 4-1 heading to USF.  USF put 50 on Memphis a year ago, but Memphis scored 59. 

The goal is a split at USF and at UTSA, which keeps them in the mix to get to the AAC title game.  Based on past defensive woes, Memphis will be tasked to outscore North Texas and Charlotte, but these are home games.  UAB is another very powerful offense, another Memphis home game. 

The finale is at Tulane.  It’s possible that game decides who plays for the AAC title.  Tulane has won four in a row vs. the Tigers, but appear a bit weaker now, although playing them game 12 is different than playing that new staff in September.  

 

Memphis 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

Despite the home record, Silverfield is 5-11-1 ATS as a home favorite.  If the point defense is still below par, there are a few October home games that I could fade them (inflated #’s).
