Ryan Satterfield is 21-16 here, and I’ve been “lucky” enough to predict their record all three seasons.  I suspect Memphis fans want to see more than just another six- or seven-win regular season, especially with three of the big boys out of the AAC.  It’s time for the staff to make this happen.

Memphis Tigers Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

The 21-37 sack ratio is borderline criminal for this type of program.  Offensively, a solid QB and three OL returnees are in pace.  Defensively, the top three pass rushers are back.  This is a must watch.  The other worry offensively is at WR, with the leading returnee having just 18 receptions.  Each level defensively lost two players with eight or more starts. 

The pass defense percentage has been high in each of the past three seasons.  Why hasn’t this program risen to the level of a top tier AAC stat sheet?  In their best two seasons (different coaching staff) the offense excelled, but not the defense.  Memphis is used to fielding strong special team units.  The latest coordinator was let go, which is a bit puzzling. 

The new guy oversaw more modest results at Buffalo.  A decent PK (projection) is in, but he replaces a guy who was 21-24.

Memphis 2023 Predictions, Memphis Tigers Schedule:

Memphis should start 3-0, with games 4-5 before the bye week in St Louis to face Missouri and home to Boise.  The games after the week off are all inside the AAC. 

Can the Tigers continue to win at home in the Tulane series?  They are historically not a good home favorite (30-50 ATS, 4-8 with this coach).  They’ll likely be favored in road games at UAB and North Texas, both schools sporting new coaches. 

Their final four games are also vs. 1^st or 2^nd year coaches.  Strangely enough, this staff is just 3-11 in road games.  It will be interesting to chart ’23 results, as showing little to no stat improvement vs. so many new coaching staffs can’t be taken as a good sign

Memphis Tigers Football Bottom Line:

8-4 is clearly in play, as is a berth in the AAC title game, but I may opt for 7-5 based on what I see are flaws with the staff, and concerns with the special team unit.  QB Henigan is good enough to exceed 7-5, but if he gets hurt, there’s no one in reserve (keep that in mind).

Memphis Tigers Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

This is one team I will miss from tier one evaluations, but either a conference is all in or all out with individual team sheets (26-9 ATS last ten years, just 1-2 last year).  A win vs. Boise would set them up in a favorable situation hosting Tulane.  Other than that, I won’t jump at taking them as a home favorite, and will assess my team keys to determine if they are vulnerable at certain times.
