Michigan Football Betting Preview | 2024 Wolverines Predictions and Odds

Michigan Football Flag

One year removed from its 12th National Championship, how much regression is looming for the Michigan football program in 2024? The Wolverines have been tasked with replacing their head coach, starting quarterback and several key pieces from last year’s undefeated squad.

Michigan will only leave home one time in the first seven weeks of the season, so new head coach Sherrone Moore won’t be racking up the frequent flyer miles in his first year at the helm.

Generally speaking, we are a little higher on the Wolverines compared to the rest of the betting market in the summer. DraftKings has released six Games of the Year lines for contests involving Michigan, and we show value on the maize-and-blue in most of them, including the Week 2 non-conference clash with Texas.

  • Michigan +3.5 vs Texas
  • Michigan -9.5 vs USC
  • Michigan -9 at Washington
  • Michigan -23 vs Michigan State
  • Michigan +3 vs Oregon
  • Michigan +10 at Ohio State

Odds above courtesy of DraftKings as of Friday, July 19. Coach Moore got his feet wet with the headset last season when former head coach Jim Harbaugh was suspended. He has spent the past six seasons within the program, serving as the tight ends coach for three seasons before taking over as co-offensive coordinator for the last three years. After spending the last 20 years in the NFL, Don ‘Wink’ Martindale has been lured to Ann Arbor to serve as the Wolverines’ defensive coordinator. Kirk Campbell has been promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator to lead the offense this season.

Michigan Football Returning Production

Michigan’s returning production level ranks as one of the lowest in the country heading into the 2024-25 season. The Wolverines are projected to return one starter on offense and six on defense. According to ESPN’s Bill Connelly, Michigan is projected to return 40-percent of its production from last season: 27-percent on offense and 53-percent on defense.

Coach Moore was able to attract a top-20 class of incoming talent this season (freshmen + transfers), per 247Sports. The biggest question will come at quarterback where the maize-and-blue do not have a clear-cut replacement for top-10 draft pick J.J. McCarthy.

Alex Orji has been in the Michigan program for several seasons learning under Coach Moore. However, he’s only thrown one pass in his college career, and did not attempt a single pass last season. Indiana transfer Jack Tuttle has starting experience in the Big Ten, and is widely considered to be the better pocket passer.

Early expectations are that Orji will lead the team on the field in Week 1 against Fresno State, but Tuttle will receive playing time and will be given the opportunity to compete for the job.
