Minnesota College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
P.J. Fleck rubs some people the wrong way, but he gets the most out of the talent at hand. Last year was disappointing, and at 5-7, they only made a bowl game because not enough teams were eligible. Do they rebound, or is the luster wearing off?
2024 Minnesota Gophers NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
Let’s start with the defense. The new coordinator might be a downgrade. If his scheme is sound, pass pressure will ramp up (good returning nucleus).
The secondary lost Tyler Nubin to the NFL. That’s my biggest worry on this side of the ball. Minny’s 4.0 run attack was their worst under Fleck. It should spike up again now, with more RB experience, plus four returning OL starters.
I strongly disliked their ’23 QB. The new guy has plenty of starting experience, but that was at New Hampshire. Turnovers must be monitored. The WR/TE room is mediocre. The kicking game is solid.

6-6 or just 5-7? In some ways, Minny is flying under the radar, and I do think the stat sheet will improve, especially in the run game.
My worries are the defensive coordinator switch, the young secondary, and some turnover issues. I’m intrigued by what they might look like in ’24, but find it best right now to go in with an open mind.

Minnesota 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
I’ll take Iowa 9/21 f they are a road underdog. I’ll consider Minnesota 10/5 vs. USC if they are a dog of >7 points, with checks of USC’s run D and Minny’s pass D% critical. I’ll hope to back Minnesota 10/26 hosting Maryland if one of two conditions exist. I also hope to have Minnesota 11/9 when they host Penn State, with two situations “possibly” in play.
2024 Minnesota Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Minnesota opens hosting North Carolina in a massively good and important game! I see strengths for both teams. Iowa is a good road team, and will be focused due to the fact they had a game stolen from them a year ago (documented in replays on the punt return).
The 3rd highly interesting game is also at home, vs. USC. The game comes right after they go to Michigan, so I need to check Minnesota’s mindset.
Is Minnesota capable of going 2-1 in these three home games? Only if QB play is solid, and the secondary doesn’t disappoint. The range of outcomes is massive in games 7-10. They go to UCLA, host Maryland, then have consecutive road games at Illinois and Rutgers. They may need a 2-2 split to get or stay bowl relevant.
Minny will be rested before hosting Penn State (last host was a 31-26 upset win in ’19). They close at Wisconsin, where I will precheck how the Badgers are doing at home in Fickell’s 2nd season.
