The post-Ken Niumatalolo era in Annapolis begins with Navy setting sail to Dublin to face Notre Dame.
The Midshipmen covered the number last year against the Fighting Irish, only losing by three (35-32) as 17-point underdogs in South Bend.
Brian Newberry takes over as the new Navy HC after previously serving as the DC. The Midshipmen defense brings back plenty of experience after a relatively strong finish to 2022. Over the Middies’ final five games, only ND scored more than 20 against them. I know the Irish have brought in Sam Hartman to be the new QB but I’m not necessarily expecting them to score a ton of points in this season opener. With Tommy Rees off to Tuscaloosa, former TE coach Gerard Parker is the new OC and there will be a “learning curve” with a 1st time playcaller and new QB.
We know what Navy will look to do offensively, even with their own new OC. Grant Chesnut comes over from Kennesaw State, a FCS program that ran the triple option. Even though Notre Dame will have plenty of time to prepare for the triple option, this is a unit that lost over 60% of its tackles from last season.
Taking points with service academies always seems to be a good idea and sure enough Navy is 14-6 ATS L3 seasons getting points and 10-2 ATS L12 as a DD dog of 3 TDs or less!
