Navy College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Navy is 16-30 the past four seasons, with new coach Newberry 5-7 last year.  The once vaunted rush attack has been normalized all four years.  Changes are planned for ’24.

2024 Navy NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

New coordinator Drew Cronic (Mercer) plans to run something called a hybrid Wing-T.  This offense has plenty of wrinkles, designed to make opponents play the full field.  Interestingly enough, Mercer passed the ball well, and their run offense was average. 

The top two RB’s return, so I’ll be charting #’s early and often.  Navy has played much better vs. the run of late.  That could end this year, as I rate the DL as clearly weaker.  As a service academy, Navy doesn’t get much practice vs. the pass, and it shows on their seasonal stat sheet. 

Still, I like the DB’s this season.  Kicking is mediocre and will likely cost them a game this year.

Navy Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

4-8 or 5-7, although I like their Head Coach.  Not listed above is trying to replicate a +11 turnover ratio.  With a new scheme, that scares me.  They’ll need two upsets to challenge for a bowl berth.

2024 Navy Football Schedule and Games to Watch

The ’23 schedule featured an unheard of four bye weeks, which I had NEVER seen! 

It was shocking to see Navy unable to take advantage of this. 

2-0 is expected this year, building confidence.  Playing pass happy UAB and then run happy Air Force in consecutive weeks is not ideal.  If they lose hosting Memphis, then they need to beat a rested Charlotte team to reach 3-3. 

I’ll precheck Navy’s new offensive scheme and see if the pass D can improve.  Winning at Rice might be important to get to 6-6.  Both teams have average at best PK’s, which might decide who wins.  Closing games are home to Tulane, at East Carolina and then the Army game.  Winning late depends on year two staff improvement and the kicking game.
 
  

Navy 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

Navy entered ’23 49-21 ATS as a rush pick (9-2 lately, even in down years).  I no longer keep weekly rush stats for them (stopped last year), but back testing, they went 3-2 in that role last year with the new staff.  Always a solid road dog, they went 1-1 in ’23. 

Other fantastic situations may not be relevant with this staff.  My plan might be a 60-40 vs. portfolio thanks to turnover regression and the kicking game.
