NC State College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Expectations. The last time NC State had them the Wolfpack failed to deliver. With reduced expectations in ‘23, NC State beat all the top teams down the stretch to finish with nine wins. Can they handle the limelight in ‘24?
2024 NC State NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
The ’23 stat sheet was quite modest. NC State dominated down the stretch, yet the statistical profile did not change. What DID change is going +9 in turnover margin over the last five games (+10 overall). Usually, that regresses, although I expect them to remain in the plus column.
NC State was just 11th in ACC point offense. That MUST improve, and I think it does with their offensive coordinator in year #2, a solid transfer QB, an above average WR unit, and an OL that I like. The front seven defensively will not be as stout, especially without all-everything LB Payton Wilson (138 tackles, now in the NFL).
Still, any drop-off likely is not enough to move them into a freefall statistically. This is one team that will need to prove itself in the kicking game. The new guy is untested. It’s perhaps the biggest area of concern and the one that could make or break their season. Yes, I care about special teams.
NC State Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
There’s no excuse for not meeting expectations this season. My only concerns are finding a leader to replace LB Wilson, especially with some front seven depth issues, and what happens at PK.
I am a bit uncomfortable recommending 9-3, especially with my stat sheet projections, but I love the schedule pace and like the coordinators. NC St may not win by margin much (see below), but as long as the kicking game does not implode, they can beat any team on their schedule.

2024 NC State Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Game #2 is vs. Tennessee, to be played in Charlotte.
Game #4 is at a rested Clemson team bent on revenge. Go 0-2 here, and NC State will need to either win every other game, or use tiebreakers to get to the ACC title game, where a win gets them into the playoffs.
I’ll precheck Wake in road games before 10/5, but this should be a win (but not by margin?). Considering NC State is 16-33 ATS as a double-digit ACC favorite, some games will likely be closer than expected. They were 0-2 in that role in ’22, and 0-0 in ’23.
The schedule-maker was extremely kind to the Wolfpack, as they do not even leave the state until flying to California on 10/19! They will only leave the state one more time, to face Georgia Tech on 11/21, and that comes with 12 days off!
The schedule literally has no traps or letdown spots at all. It concludes with the road game at North Carolina, and even then, the Wolfpack has a two-day rest advantage.
NC State 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
Stats to keep an eye on (in addition to the one listed above). NC St is 52-29 as a home dog (7-1 lately). They are 15-5 ATS off rest.
Rush data is 10-2 ATS lately (7-2 when against NC St). I’ll be using this info, plus checking the turnover ratio and kicking game as guides for ’24 action. I will likely side with NC St if they are an underdog 11/21 at GT.
