Nebraska College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

In the amazing but true category, Nebraska last went bowling in ‘16!  They sat 5-3 last year, then dropped their last four games, by 3-3-3-7 points.  They are 28-52 the past seven seasons.  Is this another year where they tease the NCAA community?  
  

2024 Nebraska CornHuskers NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

Here’s all you need to know about ’23.  Nebraska was -17 in turnover ratio, and -8 in their four late, close losses.  Of course, the team who lost millions of games due to poor special team play (seven in one season alone) only hired a special team coordinator in ’22. 

Their current PK was 60% a year ago.  Freshman QB Dylan Raiola is the nation’s top QB recruit.  The incumbent was awful, so here’s hoping Raiola hits the ground running.  The OL looks decent, so that helps. 

WR and RB talent is enough to predict some success.  Matt Ruhle is a defensive coach at heart, but the offense needs to average more than 15.4 points per game (Big Ten play).  Nebraska’s defense allowed just 17.6 points per game in Big Ten play, and their coordinator is a good one.  The front seven is solid, and will limit opponents in the run game.  The secondary has some holes to fill, but will likely be decent.  

 

Nebraska Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

5-2 to start, and perhaps 7-5.  The floor HAS to be 6-6 and a bowl berth, and if Raiola is special, 8-4 would not be a surprise. 

My lean (no play) would be under 7.5 wins, but the potential is there to finally exceed expectations.

Nebraska 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

I said a year ago that I would be okay fading them if not a rush pick, but that never happened.  I like the UNDERS 9/14 hosting Northern Iowa and 10/5 hosting Purdue, with QB play the one unknown variable.  I’ll study their offense early on otherwise, with no other leans or plays until I see how they are performing.

2024 Nebraska Football Schedule and Games to Watch

On 9/7, Nebraska seeks revenge hosting Colorado.  That’s a big test for their pass D, which allowed 36 points in their one-sided loss a year ago.  In total, games 1-7 all present win opportunities, but haven’t we heard that before? 

They host Illinois and Rutgers, and both teams should be slowed down or stopped by this defense.  The obvious key to winning these two games (and most games in ’24) is the freshman QB, turnovers, and anything related to special team play. 

Early road games are at Purdue (won 31-14 hosting Purdue in ’23) and at Indiana (new coach, massive player turnover).  The four toughest opponents on their schedule are in games 8-12.  They host UCLA, which on paper “should” be a win, but so should have most of their final four games a year ago.  The final two games are home to Wisconsin (lost last nine in series) and at Iowa (coaching and kicking errors have cost them in this series, but they did pull out an upset in ’22 at their place).  Again, fix the turnover ratio and show a special team pulse and maybe this season is easier.
