North Texas College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
North Texas made the CUSA title game in ’22 but still changed their Head Coach (44-37 in the regular season). Eric Morris was another offensive-minded hire, which for the most part, was not the issue. As I expected, they finished 5-7, with all kinds of defensive issues. Now what?
2024 North Texas NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
The staff returns, but is still in learning mode. I have two RB’s that need a weekly check, but I expect some regression with two very stout RB’s missing. QB play will be similar (good scheme) but the transfer QB will likely commit more turnovers.
Both tackles are raw, and I don’t know if they can significantly reduce the 38 sacks allowed, which compared to the previous three seasons under the old staff, was quite disturbing (45 total previous three seasons). The run defense, 4.8 in ’22, was 5.6-255 a year ago.
Coaching has to improve. The secondary is full of transfers. On paper, that talent is better, but how soon does it come together? Last year they allowed 37 or more points eight times, and 27 or more in three other games. Last year’s PK was well above average. This year’s PK has never tried a field goal.

Here’s my issues: A raw coaching staff, backfield regression, massive issues defending the run, and an unknown kicking game.
With that said, the offensive scheme works, and the schedule has plenty of win opportunities on it. I show them 4-6 going into two winnable games to end the season. I don’t know if they can pull off 6-6, but another 5-7 campaign would, and should bring about some changes to the supporting coaching staff.

2024 North Texas Football Schedule and Games to Watch
North Texas will start somewhere between 1-3 and 3-1, depending on how they fare vs. new coaches at South Alabama and home to Wyoming. Interesting October games include at FAU and Memphis. The goal is 1-1, and the Mean Green were somewhat competitive on the road a year ago. A precheck has to be points allowed.
They get Tulane at home, but figure (so far) to be a clear underdog. North Texas pulled no upsets as a home dog last year. Having a week off before facing Army’s option is a perk. If they can’t win this one, it becomes a warning for me that the staff is not good enough. Closing games are vs. East Carolina (last met in 1979) and at Temple. Despite being 3-7, North Texas won their last two games a year ago. I expect them to be competitive again this year at the end of the season.
North Texas 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
I’ll use the early games vs. the new staffs of South Alabama and Wyoming to help guide me. As of July 29th, my only lean would be to back them vs. Army on 11/3 if there’s any defensive improvement.
