Old Dominion College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Old Dominion (ODU) did not play football in 2020. The Monarchs had ground to make up, but have been to a pair of bowl games (both losses) since. It’s time to find out their true level in the Sun Belt.
2024 Old Dominion NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
The two biggest areas of concern offensively would be the run game and their pass protection. QB play was solid, especially considering the OL allowed a nearly world record 61 sacks.
They lose two RB’s who combined for a stat sheet of 208-1,246, which is 6.0 per carry. That’s a must watch! Their 2nd through 6th leading tacklers are gone. I think defensive sacks (19) can rise, but the secondary looks weak.
Their leading tackler is a monster, threatening to break NCAA records (170 tackles last year). He needs to stay healthy. Only two ODU games were decided by more than seven points (both losses). Their PK is the definition of average. They were 1-0 in games decided by a late field goal.

Where’s the talent infusion? How far can a decent QB take them? This looks about 4-8, or 3-9. Much depends on their opponents, as ODU has to hope that several of the Sun Belt teams take a step back this season. I went under 5 wins.

2024 Old Dominion Football Schedule and Games to Watch
ODU needs to beat East Carolina on 9/7 or likely start Sun Belt action at 0-4. Games 4-6 are not only all on the road, but two of their opponents will have had a bye week.
They are better on paper than Georgia State, but that’s the 3rd of the three road games, and that team has last play TD revenge. THIS SCHEDULE HAS NO PUSHOVERS, as ODU may be an underdog in at least ten games, and maybe even all 12 games. To change the narrative, I’ll be charting OL play, RB play, and DB play all season long.
Old Dominion 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
The underdog has been the way to look under Rahne. Even if the losses pile up, the team can cover games vs. their opponents. I’ll likely be testing the waters with 2-3 underdog plays this season, so looking that way as things develop is my recommendation.
