Ohio State vs Michigan State Predictions

  • Ohio State Buckeyes -19 vs Michigan State Spartans
  • Total: 68 Points
  • The Buckeyes have won five-straight over the Spartans, covering the spread in each of the last four.
  • Michigan State is 3-0 against the spread as an underdog this season.

Michigan State heads into Columbus, Ohio on Saturday off the back off a very good bounceback performance against Maryland last week, where the Spartans hung almost 500 yards of offense in that game along with 29 first downs after suffering their first loss of the season against Purdue in the week prior.

Michigan State were simply manhandled on defense in that game, giving up 594 yards of offense to the Boilermakers in that game and over 10 minutes time of possession on top of that.

That performance warranted a bounceback from Michigan State last week and they duly delivered, racking up 44 rushing attempts for 4.4 yards per rush on average against Maryland as they continue to find success on the ground.

Kenneth Walker continues to carry the torch for this Spartans run game, clocking up 143 yards and 2 touchdowns last week against Maryland, and even 136 yards and 1 touchdown in the week prior against Purdue.

In fact Heisman candidate Walker has put up a colossal 147.3 yards per game rushing on average this season, which is good for 1st in the nation. On top of that, Walker also leads the country in total rushing yards, total rushing touchdowns, yards after contact, 10-plus yard carries and 20-plus yard carries as he continues his assault on opposing run defenses.

Ohio State have shown themselves to have a very competent run defense however this season, giving up just 107.3 ypg on the ground this year, but have been got to in the past as CJ Verdell hung 161 yards and 2 touchdowns against them back in Week 2’s loss against the Oregon Ducks.

Whether Ohio State find success in stopping Walker or not, on the opposite side of the ball, Ohio State are really playing some lights out football right now, leading the nation in both offensive scoring at 46.3 ppg and leading in total offense also, putting up a mammoth 572.2 ypg at home this season, and only seem to be getting better as the season goes on.

Purdue, who have been the bane of so many top ten ranked teams this season, including Iowa and Michigan State, got absolutely flatlined by the Buckeyes last week, giving up 624 yards of offense with the final scoreline actually flaterring Purdue somewhat as they were never in that game, down 52-17 midway through the 3rd quarter before Ohio State started to ease off the gas pedal to close out the game.

Overall, I made this current Spartans/Buckeyes clash around the two touchdown mark here for Ohio State so, where the line currently sits at time of writing at -19, this line is somewhat inflated here and I believe Sparty offer the value side in this one on Saturday.

Ohio State vs Michigan State Analysis from The GoldSheet

Blowout of Purdue helped solidify Ohio State’s position in the playoff pecking order, even if the defense once again left something to be desired. Buckeyes welcomed back WR Garrett Wilson (10 catches for 126 yards and four touchdowns) and frosh sensation TreVeyon Henderson (98 yards rushing and two touchdowns). The Buckeye defense was hurt by Aidan O’Connell (390 yards passing and four touchdowns), and we’re beginning to think MSU QB Payton Thorne can do at least some of the same things to the Buckeye secondary, which is ranked No. 108 in passing yards allowed. There’s just one issue: The OSU offense (No. 1 in the nation at 550 yards per game) against a Michigan State pass defense that has given up more passing yards than any other major college team.
