Oklahoma State vs Oklahoma Predictions

  • Oklahoma State -4.5 vs Oklahoma
  • Total: 49.5 Points
  • Oklahoma has covered the point spread in five of the last six meetings between these teams.
  • Oklahoma State has covered the spread in each of their last nine games.
  • Oklahoma is 0-3 against the spread in Big XII road games this year.

Oklahoma travel to Boone Pickens Stadium on Saturday to take on Oklahoma State in the Bedlam Series, with both teams looking to force their way into the National Playoff picture with a big win and cover in this one.

Oklahoma come off a 28-21 win last weekend against a good Iowa State team, but were fortunate in that one as they were outgained in a lot of that contest. The Cyclones held a 25 to 14 first down advantage in that game, they outyarded Oklahoma by almost 60 yards as well, and had almost 17 minutes more time of possession than the Sooners, with a final potential game winning drive held short by an interception late by Iowa State, so it was a far from impressive performance by Oklahoma in that game.

And that’s been the tale of this Oklahoma team all season. The Sooners have benefitted from an average of 2.7 opponent fumbles per game this season at home, the highest in the country, they have accumulated 1.1 giveaways per game on average as well, and have a +1.7 turnover margin advantage over their last three starts also, tied for 9th most in the country right now so, this is a team that has benefitted from fortunate breaks all season and they’ll need to continue to do so here if they’re to have any chance of overturning this well-oiled Oklahoma State team this weekend.

The Cowboys have one of the most elite defensive units in the country right now. Oklahoma State ranks 3rd in the country on defense this year, giving up just 253.8 ypg on average, and that’s improved again to just 171.3 ypg over their last three starts, almost 40 yards per game less than anyone else in the country right now.

On top of that, the Cowboys lead the nation in total sacks, tackles for loss and 3rd down defense as well, with their offense improving steadily also, averaging 482.3 ypg and 41.3 ppg over their last four starts.

With three of Oklahoma State’s last four opponents not even breaking the 3 point barrier (Kansas 3, West Virginia 3, Texas Tech 0), this team is peaking at the right time and I see them having far too much for an Oklahoma Sooners team here on Saturday that has benefitted far too often from bounce of the ball type situations this year.

Take the Oklahoma State Cowboys to win and cover this one at home on Saturday against Oklahoma in the Bedlam Series.

Oklahoma State vs Oklahoma Analysis from The GoldSheet

There have been Bedlam games with significant implications in the past, but this 2021 showdown with a berth in the Big XII Championship at stake figures to go down as one of the most memorable. Oklahoma State is in the driver’s seat, at home and loaded on defense with a unit that just put together a shutout of Texas Tech in posting a fourth consecutive game surrendering 17 or fewer points. Oklahoma bounced back from being held to 17 points by Baylor but still sputtered some against Iowa State, breaking through on a big play from QB Caleb Williams on a busted coverage as he was able to find a hole and call his own number for a huge run. The Sooners’ passing attack has hit a major snag of late, which doesn’t bode well for their chances of responding on the road against such a gifted, disciplined defense. Mike Gundy has so much confidence in that group that he’s not taking chances with his offense, opting for a vanilla approach on that side of the ball. Considering what’s at stake here, look for a conservative approach to produce a low-scoring game and ride the low side on a total in the 50-point range.
