Oregon Ducks College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Dan Lanning was a nice hire for Oregon, primarily because he brought the SEC mentality to the PAC 12. That makes him even more valuable as Oregon shifts to play more physical teams. The future looks bright.
2024 Oregon Ducks NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
QB Bo Nix will be missed, but Dillon Gabriel is one of the better NCAA QB’s, with nearly as stout accuracy as Nix. Playing in the tougher Big Ten (defensively), my run O projection is “lowered” from 6.15 per carry to 5.4. That’s plenty good.
The rest of the offense looks good, with nearly suitable replacements for a couple of stars lost. I don’t think we’ll see as good a defense this year, although in the PAC 12, QB play was superb in ’23.
I found it incredible that Oregon allowed just 12 points per game to all PAC 12 teams not named Washington. This side of the ball will look different, with six transfers slated to start. The biggest impact will be in the secondary, where three pretty good transfers are stepping in. My run D projection is a bit weaker, but still a respectable 4.0 per carry. Oregon has faltered most years in the kicking game, which cost them in their 1st game vs. Washington, and then altered the game plan in the rematch.
I’d like to throw in an expletive here, but let’s just say that they “stole” a PK that could solve their problems (13-14 last year at a school about 40 miles north of Eugene).
Oregon Ducks Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
11-1? Oregon and Texas are my 3rd and 4th rated teams as of 7/25. Hosting Ohio State puts them on near even terms with the Buckeyes. Games at Michigan and Wisconsin are dangerous, but look for this team to be solidly included in the 12-team playoff discussion.

2024 Oregon Ducks Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Boise is improved and a big favorite in the Mountain West, but Oregon should be better, especially at home. Having a week off before visiting a potentially “down” UCLA should result in another win. That puts them at 5-0 prior to hosting Ohio State.
Win or lose, there could be a letdown at Purdue the following week. Still, that should be a winnable game. The next tough one is 11/2, at Michigan. The Wolverines are weaker this year, but that’s a tough place to play, and an upset is possible.
Oregon closes at Wisconsin (another crazy environment, and maybe Wisconsin is improving) and home to rival Washington, where they home to extract (triple) revenge.

I’m sad the PAC 12 has imploded for many reasons, including wagering reasons. I’ll be in more play on mode than play against this season, with the game at Purdue on 10/19 one that I could be going against the Ducks.
