Oregon State Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH, Betting Insights

QB play was more cold than hot in ’22. The battle is on as ex-Clemson QB Uiagalelei looks to unseat the incumbent, hoping his move to Corvallis is a good thing.

It’s all systems go for a loaded RB room and the same OL as a year ago. The WR’s are elusive but SHORT! I’m surprised one taller target was not added through the portal.

The defense exceeded expectations last year, especially vs. the pass. The run defense looks similar, but the talent in the secondary is a bit thin. In total, four of their top five tacklers are gone (top guy transferred to the SEC).

Oregon State has tallied 20 sacks in each of the past two seasons. I expect a spike this year with the returning talent, but of course I will chart that weekly. As someone who knows this team very well, two things continue to bother me.

First, they commit too many penalties. 2nd, they have the worst Power 5 kicking game, and that’s documented. The incumbent is a massive liability. 25 or more PK’s changed teams through the portal. Why not here?

Oregon State Football 2023 Predictions, Oregon State Schedule and Obstacles:

3-0 is possible but not a guarantee with games at San Jose State and home to South Dakota State, Oregon State broke an eight-game losing streak vs. Washington State. The rematch is at their place and I call this one a tossup.

Oregon State upset Utah as a host in ’21, but their only loss of over three points was at Utah a year ago. The Utes have a massive special team edge.

That game is on a Friday. Like with Washington State, the game at Cal is tricky. I think they can beat UCLA at home, and then go on a mini-run after the bye with a softer schedule.

Pre-checks will be QB play, pass pressure, and sadly, the kicking game. The final two games are home to Washington (last three decided by referee mistakes), and at Oregon.

Oregon State Football Bottom Line: Total Expected Wins Over/Under

As high as 8-2 to the final two games, so that makes the ceiling 9-3. This is a real good team, but the total disregard of fixing the kicking game holds them back.

There won’t be a Rose Bowl appearance after this season, but I’d be thrilled to see them meet expectations and play in the Holiday Bowl. They would pack that place with a fan base that travels extremely well.

Oregon State Football HANDICAPPING TIP: EXPERT TIP

Being an alumnus doesn’t guarantee spread success, even when just using the data (1-2 last year, “just” 30-22 over the past 16 years).

I lean Washington State on 9/23, Utah if a dog on 9/29, Oregon State hosting UCLA on 10/14, and that’s about it. Current rush stat numbers have been working (36-25 ATS, 2-2 last year).
