Pinstripe Bowl Predictions
Virginia Tech fired HC Justin Fuente in November, eventually hiring Penn State DC Brent Pry to the position, although it will be Tech assistant JC Price leading the team into this game. The Hokie offense struggled this season, and it will be without starting QB Braxton Burmeister, who entered the transfer portal along with backup QB Knox Kadum and WR Tayvion Robinson (guess Pry told them he was going in a different direction). Additionally, WRs Tre Turner and Changa Hodge, TE James Mitchell, NT Jordan Williams and DE Amare Barno have all declared for the NFL draft (only Hodge will play in Yankee Stadium). Further all-ACC G Lecitus Smith, CB Jermaine Waller will also go to the NFL and miss this game.
Virginia Tech struggled all season, also needing a victory over Virginia in the regular season finale in order to qualify for the Pinstripe Bowl, and it will be a skeleton crew with basically half the regular-season starting lineup on the field for this game.
Maryland’s 4-0 start for HC Mike Locksley in his 3rd season in charge faded to a 2-6 finish that saw them win bowl eligibility by taking down Rutgers on the last day of the Big Ten regular season in what amounted to a playoff for a bowl bid for both sides (Scarlet Knights were 5-6 heading into that one as well).
The Terps have some edges in this game offensively, with Taulia Tagovailoa throwing for 3595 YP with 24 TDs, but also 11 ints., to give the Terps the 13th-ranked pass attack in the country. Maryland has a talented and deep receiving corps despite losing WR Dontay Demus and Jeshaun Jones around midseason and Marcus Fleming in mid-November. There are still 7 pass catchers remaining with at least 18 receptions, led by WR Rakim Jarrett (56 for 769 yds., 5 TDs), TE Chigoziem Okonkwo (49 for 433 yds. 5 TDs) and WR Carlos Carriere (24 for 316, 5 TDs).
The rushing attack boasted Tayon Fleet-Davis, who had 664 YR, 5.5 ypc with 8 TDs as well as grabbing 32 passes for another 305 and a score. The bad news for Locksley’s crew is the performance of the defense, which yielded more than 420 yds. 8 times and 105th at 32 ppg.
With the top two QBs, and the best players from every other group gone, can’t see the Hokies defense holding up against the talented Maryland passing attack.
