Pittsburgh College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Is Pat Naduzzi running out of time? At 62-41 prior to last year’s 3-9 slide, maybe not, but the Panthers cannot afford to be left behind as the ACC and entire NCAA landscape changes. Changes are coming to this team in ’24. Let’s evaluate.
2024 Pittsburgh NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
Most of my ’23 projections were good. After running 5.5-193 in ’22 I had them going just 4.3 last year. They ran 4.1-119. 31-year-old Kade Bell is the new coordinator.
Nate Yarnell looked good in limited action last year and the 6’6” junior gets 1st crack at QB. The rest of the unit has bowl-eligible talent, but can the young coordinator make it happen? Pitt’s defense has always been a conundrum.
From Aaron Donald on out, this is an elite sack team. In the 51 games prior to last year (four-year span), the Panthers produced a whopping 199 sacks, likely #1 in the NCAA. They dropped to 31 last year and return very few sack producers this year. Should we worry? Possibly yes, as their solid DL coach also left (NFL). Only four starters return.
After years of finishing with a Power Number of 79 or above, Pitt’s rating ended at 69.5 last season. Work needs to be done to build this team back up. The PK returns, and he was 11-13 from 47 yards on in (0-3 beyond that).
Pittsburgh Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
6-6 or 7-5? On paper, this team is quite vulnerable, with a young offensive coordinator, average QB, and some defensive issues. The schedule however, works in their favor more often than not.
I expect many a close game with the Panthers, so these team keys are crucial. Will the team talent let them down? I added a small ticket OVER 5.5 wins (+130).

2024 Pittsburgh Football Schedule and Games to Watch
The schedule is easier. The toughest non-conference games are at Cincinnati and home to West Virginia (both are revenge spots).
The revenge motive is NOT always that critical (depending on how the previous game played out), and is best when combined with other technical factors, but with this team, revenge has been an incredibly solid tool. Yet another revenge game is 10/5 at North Carolina. I’ll pre-check that defense, and if the Panthers have found a pass rush.
As always, these prechecks are a very useful handicapping tool. There’s a 4th revenge game when they host Syracuse on 10/24. That one might have some other situations attached to it, plus the Panthers are 16-1 SU as a host in the series, and face a new coaching staff.
Here’s two thoughts on the SMU matchup: 1st, SMU and their QB might be fully capable of exploiting Pittsburgh’s (too) aggressive pass D philosophy. 2nd, a detailed study of how SMU has handled the bump up to the ACC is an absolute must.
Given Pittsburgh’s history, I might worry more about hosting Virginia (11/9) than the game vs. Clemson the following week (11/16).
Pittsburgh closes with road games at Louisville (they have revenge) and Boston College (BC with revenge, but with a different coaching staff). Pittsburgh was 0-5 SU on the road in ’23 but above 50% (23-20) in Narduzzi’s 1st eight seasons.
Pittsburgh 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
Always stout, revenge data in their games are 98-63 ATS overall. I like Pittsburgh if a home dog 9/14 vs. West Virginia, but might fade them 9/21 in a clear sandwich game 9/21 vs. 8-5 Youngstown St (below average history vs. the Penguins).
I’ll take Pittsburgh if a double-digit dog 10/5 at North Carolina. If they beat Cal on 10/12, I’ll be backing the Panthers hosting Syracuse 10/24 with several factors possibly in my favor.
The leans continue, as I look Virginia’s way 11/9, but possibly pivot to take Pittsburgh hosting Clemson the next week. One caveat: Pay attention to the rush data. It has a decent (55%) track record here.
