Purdue College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Purdue went a predictable 4-8 under 1st year coach Ryan Walters. Pundits pick them for 18th and last in ’24. Is the sky falling?
2024 Purdue NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
Ryan Walters is a defensive coach by trade, and although they allowed in excess of 30 points per game, the stat sheet was decent, with a 4.35-154 run defense, and a stout 54.3% pass defense. It looks like more of the same on paper, with the front seven showing roster holes, but the secondary looking good. QB Hudson Card’s stat sheet wasn’t bad either.
There’s an extra RB now, and that stat sheet (4.65 per carry) was also solid. The OL is a work in progress, but has four starters back. Only WR looks like a liability. So how did this implode? Purdue was abysmal on special teams, and yes, special team play matters. Two PK’s combined to go 8-17. In looking back, the ’23 schedule was much tougher than the ’22 version. Still, the stat sheet should have seen them be more competitive.

Another 4-8. I was hoping to say more, because it seems like their #’s show hidden value, and I like to uncover teams that other people are not talking about.
Unfortunately, Purdue is confronted with at least two, and as many as four tried and true negative situations that have me holding back. The schedule in fact says 3-9, but I like the QB and the pass defense. One piece of advice for their staff: Get that special team unit fixed.

2024 Purdue Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Game #3 in in Corvallis. On the surface, this looks like a tossup (with OSU’s roster depleted), but two brutal, team specific situations (19-49 ATS) work against Purdue. 2-2 is still possible IF they can defeat Nebraska. Purdue was 3-4 at home in ’23, so this is possible.
Based on schedule layout and, opponent, the next win shot isn’t until 11/2, hosting Northwestern. This has not been an easy game for Purdue. Can Purdue threaten Penn State at home? They lost a close one in ’22 with the previous staff.
This one depends more on Penn State’s ’24 performance and less about Purdue. Purdue was 1-4 on the road in ’23. They close at Mich St and Northwestern. I’ll precheck how they’ve performed on the road, plus determine if special team play will continue to hold them back.
