Rutgers Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Trying desperately to field a better offense, another new coordinator is here.  Kirk Ciarrocca has spent plenty of time in the Big 10. 

His backfield returns intact but offensive output has been unimpressive for years.  Kirk, plus a new OL coach from the NYG will be tracked early and often by me. 

The (corrected for sacks) run offense was at it’s peak in 2018, at just 4.05.  I’m using 4.05 this year.  Defensive numbers weren’t bad. 

There’s decent experience at all three levels, and if the offense can stay on the field a little longer than the defense can get noticed.  With all that said, it’s wise to parse out conference only numbers just to show how much improvement still needs to be made.  The point ratio was 105-309 and QB accuracy was dismal (48.7%).

Rutgers 2023 Predictions, Rutgers Schedule:

As it turns out, opening vs. Northwestern might be a good thing.  As I write this, Pat Fitzgerald has been fired for cause, and we “might” see numerous portal transfers in August.  Stay tuned.  Schiano is two for two vs. Temple these past two seasons. 

I don’t see this as an automatic win, with that team returning plenty of starters.  Virginia Tech seems to be on a downward cycle, making this an ideal time to push the record to 3-0. 

Again, this is year two for Virginia Tech’s coaching staff and some improvement is likely.  I need to see offensive improvement from Rutgers before assuming this is a 3-0 homestand start. 

Rutgers hosts rested Michigan St and travels to Indiana games 7-8.  This is Schiano’s 4^th year and there can be no excuses when facing these two teams, both of which stayed home last bowl season.  The ceiling is 6-2, but the floor could be 3-6 if it’s the “same old offense”. 

Rutgers needs every win they can get to this point, with games 9-11 vs. teams out of their price range.  In 2021, Rutgers hosted Maryland (+1.5) with both teams looking for win #6.  They lost 40-16, and lost again at Maryland 37-0 last year.  A 3^rd straight disappointing outing might mean the ceiling remains quite low.

Rutgers Football Bottom Line:

Everything was spot-on in my analysis last year, which I take it to mean that Rutgers is too predictable for their own good. 

Their task is to be more creative on offense and find a way to win games that look like tossups or better.  Even though I think something good is possible in year four, I still show just 5-7.  The games are likely to be less one-sided, but the wins still seem tougher to achieve.

Rutgers Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

Schiano teams tend to be good road dogs. 

I said that a year ago and it was true again in 2022.  That’s probably the only area I would consider backing them unless they show me something in my early season matchup data reviews.
