Rutgers College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Baby steps.  6-6 was their best record since going 7-5 in ’14.  Improvement has been noted, but Greg Schiano is just 9-27 in the Big 10 (3-6 in ’23).  Will that change in ’24, thanks to a very generous schedule?  

  

2024 Rutgers NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

QB play.  Rutgers averaged about 16.5 points in Big Ten action.  Their QB hit less than 48%, so a change was necessary.  Athan Kaliakmanis comes from Minnesota. 

He’s a career 53% guy who wasn’t impressive with the Gophers.  The current coordinator was in Minnesota coaching him, but this position remains a sore spot.  As long as RB Monanagi stays healthy the run game can be an asset.  Going 5.2 per carry when everyone knows you can’t pass the ball is impressive. 

The run D looks decent, but star DB Max Melton is off to the NFL.  Rutgers plays fundamentally sound on defense and the #’s should remain fairly strong (plenty of seniors).  Defensive-minded teams need a strong kicking game, because points are hard to come by.  Rutgers has a solid PK. 

Rutgers Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

 About 6-6?  I’d love to say more, but I don’t like the QB situation and if the RB gets hurt, the offense dies.  I respect Schiano and his defense, and the home slate is quite manageable.  Rutgers avoids the top four or five teams in the Big Ten, so maybe 6-6 is low.  The offense will determine if that is the case.

2024 Rutgers Football Schedule and Games to Watch

Game #3 is at VT.  That won’t be easy, as the improved Hokies want revenge from a 35-16 beating a year ago.  Big Ten play opens vs. Washington.  This has to be where Rutgers can thrive, as that team has a new coach and massive roster turnover. 

Rutgers has had no success vs. Wisconsin.  They host the Badgers, and like with Washington, must prove they can win games like this.  The same holds true hosting the new staff of UCLA.  Good defenses will hold this passing attack down. 

Rutgers has to overcome this to be successful.  Two more winnable home games are vs. Minnesota (like with Wisconsin, Rutgers has never defeated the Gophers) and Illinois (1-1 split in close games in ’20-’21).  The finale is at Michigan St.  Who wins out, the Rutgers offense or the Spartan defense?  

 

Rutgers 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

Schiano teams tend to be good road dogs.  Even in a 1-4 SU year, they were 2-2-1 ATS.  For now, I like the 10/5 game at Nebraska to be low scoring, and hope to back them 9/28 vs. Washington and maybe 10/26 at USC.
