Boise State Broncos (7-4, 1st in MWC – Mountain) and conference rival San Diego State Aztecs (10-1, 1st in MWC – West) square off in the regular-season finale for both schools. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET on Friday, November 26, at Dignity Health Sports Park; Carson, CA. The #19th ranked Aztecs and their guests Boise State are forecast to have sunny skies with temps in the low 80s for the start of The Mountain West Conference’s Game of the Year.
The all-time series between the two programs is tied, 3-3. The last time these two met for an official game was on October 6, 2018; the Aztecs defeated the Broncos, 19-16, on the blue Smurf-Turf in Boise. This past weekend, host San Diego State defeated UNLV in Las Vegas, winning a 28-20 final. Boise State defeated New Mexico on the Blue Turf, which wasn’t close, as the Broncos rolled to a 37-0 victory.
My title of the biggest, most crucial league contest of the year is accurate but created more by opinion and subjective variables than is reality. However, as many big games in league play close out the 2021 regular season, the cozy venue formerly known as StubHub is without doubt ground zero for who is what in the Mountain West.
Friday morning’s matchup between these two league’ mates is the only contest where both teams can play and win for a spot in the Moutain West championship. San Diego State’s yellow brick road has miles of visibility, and the forecast reads; Aztecs win, and they’re in. The path to a championship sideline for Boise State requires a straight-up victory for the Aztecs and help from the UNLV Rebels.
The University of Nevada Las Vegas’ responsibility in SDSUs quest makes it necessary that the Rebs go on the road and play the big-dog and upset the Air Force Falcons. The big-dog part of UNLVs task is overcoming the 18-point handicap that the Falcons are favored by.
The focus for investors in this MWC contest shouldn’t be on the whim and prayer of the Runnin Rebels but accessing the who and why of this early Friday morning contest in San Diego under perfect skies and with an even better temperature.
There isn’t a team with more confidence, top-end skillset, and raw potential than the Broncos. Boise has won four straight with the first victory over the Rams of Colorado State by nine points in Fort Collins. The late October “Dub” was followed by a trio of a double-digit blowout “whose is your Daddy” routs by the Boise Broncos.
Included in those four straight was an impressive performance against a then-ranked Fresno State Bulldogs group. The 7-4 Boise troupe is a field goal road favorite over a 10-1 San Diego State squad isn’t a surprise.
The old-school Aztecs are an all-or-nothing team. They pass the football like Bobby Douglas of the Chicago Bears used to, very badly. SDSU ranks a ridiculous 125 out of 130 in passing efficiency in the FBS. San Diego State wins with a commanding time of possession and running the football. The Aztecs exceeded 28-points just once since the first week of October. That one occurrence was in last week’s win over UNLV.
Boise has the offense to outscore the San Diego State defense, and in stealth fashion, twists the lid of a Mason Jar, locking away a win in time of possession as well as a victory on the Stubhub scoreboard. Finally, Recking ball tailback George Holani does enough and does so while barely breaking a sweat, leading the Boise squad to an eighth win of the season and earning a chance to steal a Mountain West title.
đź’°An argument could be made that this is the best sports week of the year: Wall-to-wall college basketball, Thanksgiving NFL and college football regular season finales. 7-Day All-Access packages are the lowest price of the year.

San Diego State vs Boise State Analysis from The GoldSheet
That Boise might need some help this weekend to claim the Mountain half of the Mountain West does not disguise the fact that the Broncos are the hottest team in the loop at the moment, winning and covering four straight, including a blowout win at dangerous Fresno a few weeks ago. The gears are finally moving in sync for first-year HC Andy Avalos, especially on a defense that’s allowed barely 11 points per game across the win streak and off of its first shutout in three years last week vs. the Lobos. So we’re hardly surprised the Broncos have been made a slight favorite in Carson, where the Aztecs conclude their two year run as tenants before moving 120 or so miles south to their new stadium next September.
It’s amazing that the school that once featured Don Coryell and his iconic teams continues to have so much trouble passing the football; SDSU ranks 125 out of 130. Though local product and ex-Georgia Tech transfer Lucas Johnson has provided a slight aerial upgrade since being inserted into the lineup by Brady Hoke a few weeks ago, the Aztecs haven’t scored more than the 28 they registered last week vs. UNLV in the past six weeks. That’s also jeopardizing SDSU’s MW West hopes, as a loss here and a Fresno win over San Jose gives the Bulldogs the crown. The Boise offense, which has rediscovered its infantry behind punishing RB George Holani (100+ YR past three weeks), rates the edge.
