I like the staff, which has amazing long-term consistency but the team must play better to win vs. this upgraded schedule, and I have concerns along the defensive line that can’t be ignored. 6-6 is my ceiling, and 5-7 is in play if my stat projections are accurate.

San Jose State Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

San Jose State’s run game regressed in ’22. They have a good lead RB (no depth) and four returning OL, so can’t they meet or exceed my modest projection (3.75)?

The 3-year run defense figures have been great (3.55 average). The DL lost everyone and my projection is up to 4.2 per carry.

I see no change in the pass D%. My keys are reducing sacks allowed (42), achieving run-pass balance, and no imploding with a weaker DL and pass rush, as their top three sackers (22 in total) are gone. The turnover ratio likely stays plus, but replicating +12 in that department is unlikely.

San Jose State football has one tougher non-conference game, and adds both Air Force and Boise State to the conference slate. That hurts.

They’ll need a split of games vs. Oregon State and at Toledo to reach 2-2, and a split of games vs. Air Force and at Boise State to be 3-3. 2-4 is the safer prediction.

Can they sweep road games at New Mexico/Hawaii/UNLV? They are 3-8 in road games the past two seasons. November home games include Fresno (poor history) and San Diego State (lost last four at home).
