Syracuse College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Dino Babers had a very erratic tenure at Syracuse.  He went 4-8 twice, then 9-3, plus a bowl victory in year #3.  The next three years ended 5-7, 1-10 and 5-7. 

Syracuse started 6-0 in ’22 and 4-0 last year, yet the total record the past two years was 13-13, Fran Brown has a limited resume but is reportedly a solid recruiter.  It’s his turn to get the Orange back to the days of glory.  

2024 Syracuse NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

QB McCord comes in from Ohio State, which looks like an upgrade.  They get a solid TE back from injury and the OL looks good as well, IF the transfers can get up to speed quickly. 

I show five transfer starters on this side of the ball.  The defense was decent in ’23, but not spectacular.  The top four tacklers return, but three of the top four pass rushers are gone, and the DL not only loses all three starters, but switch to a 4-3 look. 

Five DL transfers were added, with two slated to start.  Their progress will be closely tracked.  The back part of the defense looks steady.  Kicking is average. 

Two additional notes: 1st, the incoming coordinators are from all over the map.  It’s unclear how they will fit at this level.  2nd, the Orange went 2-6 in ACC play a year ago (4-0 non-conference).  Their point ratio was 129-242, meaning that there’s ground to be made up for Syracuse.

7-5, which is a bit higher than originally thought.  ADDED NOTE: I was hoping that when I completed my comprehensive schedule grid the # would be lower.  I complete the grid only after writing ALL 134 previews.  The now completed grid did come out lower. 

McCord is one key, with the other watch points being all the transfer starters and the varied and unusual career paths of the new coaching staff.  I have a play UNDER 7.5 wins, and this one might come down to that final host of Miami if things break right for the Orange.

2024 Syracuse Football Schedule and Games to Watch

Syracuse opens with four in a row at home, which could build confidence.  This includes hosting Georgia Tech and newcomer Stanford in early ACC play.  4-0 is possible, but the Georgia Tech game is more of a tossup, as might be the game at UNLV on 10/5. 

The road game at NC St might be difficult, so let’s call them 4-2 to this point.  They stay on the road again, but at least get the week off before heading to Pittsburgh. 

I expect a ceiling of 1-1.  The final four games are at Boston College and their new staff, at Cal, home to UConn, and home to Miami.  One never knows what motivation Miami will have late in the season, as they’ve been upset nine times when favored the past three seasons.  
  

Syracuse 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

Given the soft schedule, I’ll look to fade them when not a rush pick (NOTE: If teams with new coaches are playing each other, it doesn’t fall into the 58% play against category (roughly 54.3%, with a significantly smaller sample size). 

Any other plays will be contingent on what I learn about the QB, the transfers, and the coaching staff tendencies and readiness.
