Surprise!  Sonny Dykes has always been ahead of the curve offensively but I never suspected TCU would run the table all the way through to the Conference title. 

There were plenty of close calls, but as I’ve often said, new staff who win early create player buy-in, and winning is contagious.  But in 2023 we might find out what TCU’s true level really is.

TCU Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

TCU saw nine players drafted by the NFL, and another three players signed after the draft.  Every offensive position except TE saw at least one player drafted.  T

The same was true at all three levels of defense.  Backfield replacements are decent, but WR talent is clearly weaker, and the OL is a bit weaker as well. 

Right now, we may be looking at five transfer starters on this side of the ball.  My defensive projections are flat, but that only suggests a decent, but not spectacular overall performance.  As noted here a year ago, I liked the hire of defensive coordinator Joe Gillespie.  P

Perhaps he can make the numbers better, especially if the SEC transfers from Georgia and Florida contribute.  TCU loses their elite return specialist but retains a solid PK.  I’ll be charting QB and RB play, while also noting any unusual or unforeseen regression in some defensive areas.

TCU 2023 Predictions, TCU Schedule:

TCU clearly eases into the season, as after two very easy games, Big 12 play begins with a game at Houston, followed by SMU and West Virginia at home, Iowa State on the road, and BYU at home.  Like last year, confidence could be gained with the new faces able to adapt quickly. 

TCU destroyed ISU 62-14 last year.  I’ll be curious to see if Iowa State fields a better team this year.  It will be important to determine how “good” TCU is playing without regard to the early season record. 

TCU has title game revenge at K St.  Having ten days off before staying on the road to face Texas Tech is nice.  Since Dykes knows offense, could they give Texas a parting loss before they leave the conference? 

That game is at home, and could be emotional.  TCU had an amazing last second field goal win at Baylor a year ago.  The rematch is another TCU home game.  The season ends at Oklahoma, another team on its way out of the Big 12.

TCU Football Bottom Line:

8-4, with 9-3 clearly possible.  I think TCU got both lucky and on a roll a year ago, making its own magic.  T

The talent overall is not as good, but it’s year number two of the new regime and the systems and recruiting (including key transfers) have been elevated, probably due to their playoff run a year ago. 

If all goes well, perhaps the closing game at Oklahoma could be for a return berth to the Big 12 title game.  Let’s see if the close games go TCU’s way in 2023.
