Temple College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Temple is in a bad rut. Their last meaningful win was in October, 2021. They are 10-33 lately, with current coach Drayton 2-14 in conference play, and 0-10 on the road. Where’s the good news?
2024 Temple NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
EJ Warner lasted one year. Evan Simon comes from Rutgers, who ran a pure vanilla offense. The OL is their best area, but the run game was below average and the RB crop is pretty much invisible.
The defense mostly stayed flat, which means they were about a D+ vs. the run and pass. The DL might be their best unit (allowed 4.6/198 last year, fairly typical).
One area that did regress (predictably) was their pass rush. They went from 38 sacks down to 23. You can’t win with a horrendous -20 turnover ratio (75 points given away). QB interceptions were too high, and the defense had just three of their own. Nine of their top eleven tacklers are gone. The new PK was 13-15 at Austin Peay. I found the good news!

Usually, teams with this pronounced a turnover ratio can be undervalued the following year. Given this team’s talent, that may not be the case at Temple. I saved this nugget for now.
Defensive coordinator Everett Withers couldn’t coach my kindergarten team! His track record is one for the ages. A better staff would have 4-8 be the floor, and with a flat turnover ratio, 5-7 would be in play. I’ll call this 3-9, generously?

2024 Temple Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Believe it or not, Temple has legit win chances games 3-5. There will be hidden value when they host Coastal Carolina (new QB) 9/14.
The also host Utah State (turmoil there) and Army (short week) right after that. Honestly, anything less than 2-1 would be underachieving. Another win opportunity comes 10/19 hosting Tulsa (their coach is quite fiery, and team depth is lacking).
Most of their road games are NOT winnable, especially with this staff and this returning “talent”. November home games are vs. FAU and North Texas.
Temple 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
No season win recommendation, but when in doubt, FADE during ’24. There are at least 43 new players, and the staff won’t get them ready to play. Being so young, road games should be an issue. My goal: Find at least three games where they can be faded.
