Texas A&M College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Here’s what I wrote in this space a year ago: Can supporters (and the media) be patient if the Aggies show only modest improvement in ’23?  If there are no portal defections, I truly believe this is a top 12 team in the 1^st year of the new playoff format. 

Patience?  Forget it.  With Texas joining the SEC, Texas A&M just got “relegated”.  Mike Elko arrives to only a small dose of fanfare.  12-13 (their record these past two seasons) doesn’t sit well in College Station. 

2024 Texas A&M NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

Soph QB Weigman returns and is on an upward trajectory.  The RB room is deep.  Elko has a decent track record with the run game, and new coordinator Collin Klien comes from run-solid Kansas St.  I’m moving the figures up, from 4.1 to a projected 4.7 per carry. 

Two solid WR’s are gone but the room remains talented.  The OL also has enough talent to make a difference.  Defensively, top tackler Cooper was dynamic, but he’s off to the NFL.  This is where a number of highly touted players decided to transfer out, which is unfortunate.  Four power five transfers will start in ’24, but there will be a rise in yards-per-carry from a stout 3.6 (4.15 projected).  The secondary is projected to be decent, but a bit down from last season. 

Duke’s special team coach was solid under Elko.  He joins Elko here.  I noted in the Texas write-up that the team tried a too high 35 field goals, and 19 inside of 40 yards.  The same was true here.  Texas A&M had 17 attempts inside of 40 yards, and 35 attempts in total.  Can that be fixed?

I was right about 7-5 last year.  I like Elko, and by SEC standards, the schedule is decent (no Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma or Tennessee). 

Prior to completing my comprehensive scheduling grid, I had a strong UNDER 8.5 wins lean.  After the scheduling grid was completed, I made the play.  I see either 8-4 or 7-5 this season.  The backfield is good, but the new staff must quickly (thanks to the early schedule) figure things out in the red zone.  The defense is good, yet not quite as good as in ’23.  This team will give 100% all season long, but let’s see if they can play better on the road.

2024 Texas A&M Football Schedule and Games to Watch

There’s nothing like having a new staff start the season by hosting Notre Dame.  Maybe they can hang with the Irish, but week one is a tall ask. 

In the believe it or not column, Texas A&M has lost its last ten true road games (beat Arkansas twice on neutral ground).  On 9/14 they play at Florida.  After the Arkansas game (Arlington), Texas A&M heads home to host Missouri.  I’d like these matchups if they were played LATER in the year, and I fear they will go 1-3, and 2-2 tops before they get a week off, next playing at Mississippi St. 

I’d call this 5-2 or likely 4-3 before they host LSU, which used to be their closing game.  That’s a tossup at best, as is the game at a rested South Carolina, who plays well at home. 

While Texas A&M avoids all of the top SEC teams on their road schedule, the opponents they do face are challenging, such as the game at Auburn.  The finale?  Texas, who else?  It’s a home game, and the Texas A&M faithful will hope for an upset to end ’24.  

Texas A&M Aggies 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP

I think the game at Florida is too soon for the Aggies.  If the stat sheet stays as projected, they might also lose at South Carolina.  Coming into ‘24, I suspect I’ll have more fade than follow plays, but September will give me great insight.
