The SEC Week 10 showcase event pits the No. 13-ranked Texas A&M Aggies and No. 12 Auburn Tigers in a Saturday afternoon primetime event. Traditional footballers will be treated to a matchup that results in much more than a box score or a notch in the standings. Auburn at Texas A&M this weekend will be nothing short of manu a manu time-honored contest.
Circa Sports Book opened the wagering for this SEC contest at noon on Halloween day, positioning Texas A&M as six-point home chalk. Within two hours of posting the opening 6-point handicap, sharp-money had moved the number favoring Texas A&M as a flat 4-point home favorite, which is where it stayed through the close of Circa’s on-site brick-and-mortar shop in downtown Vegas. There has been some back-and-forth on the game line but at the time this game preview went to press, the number showed the Aggies as 4-point favorites with a total that was bet south 2.5 points off the opening 52.5 to a current 49.
Texas A&M hangs its hat on its reputation as one of the best defenses in college football. This Aggies group has rarely disappointed with the talent and skill on the defensive side of the football. Texas A&M ranks fourth in the FBS in scoring defense. Auburn can be more versatile offensively than Jimbo Fisher’s squad. Bryan Harsin’s Tigers present a varied offensive scheme with an emphasis on the opponents’ assumed strengths and weaknesses. It is unlikely that Auburn will game-plan outside the box for a game against the Aggies elite defense, especially with the game taking place in front of the 12-man in College Station.
The visiting Tigers can hold their own at the line of scrimmage. Defensively, they don’t have the number of belt notches the Aggies have earned this season, but they rank 23rd in scoring defense. Texas A&M is forced to be honest defensively when facing the versatile Bo Nix-led Auburn offense. The Tigers will emphasize containing A&M rushing attack.
Auburn quarterback Bo Nix has been a streaky signal-caller throughout his Auburn career. When he’s good, the Tiger fan base is the first to offer him accolades. When the son of a former Auburn star quarterback, Patrick Nix (Auburn QB from 1992 to 1995) orchestrates the Tigers offense without conviction, the Tigers’ faithful base is the first to critique the son of one of Auburn’s former sons.
Auburn is playing their best football of the season. The Tigers have won four of their last five, with the lone loss to the talent of No. #1 ranked Georgia. Nix has thrown for 200 or more yards in wins over LSU, Arkansas, and most recently, a good Ole Miss outfit.
The Tigers field general the for 217 in the loss to Georgia. Running back Tank Bigsby had his best game of the season in the Halloween Eve event versus the then-10th-ranked Rebels. Bigsby rushed for 140 yards on 23 carries and added two receptions in the victory over Ole Miss.
The Auburn defense has improved in understanding their assignments since the mid-September loss to Penn State. The defensive front is creating havoc in the opposition’s backfield and the over-the-top form of the Tigers’ offensive line has made the Bo Nix offense dynamic.
As Isaiah Spiller goes so go the Aggies. Devon Achane led the Aggies in total rushing yards in the win over South Carolina, gaining 154 yards on 20 carries. Spiller received 18 handoffs and ran for 102 yards rushing. Both Achane and Spillers found the end zone in the victory.
The Aggies jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead over South Carolina. The Aggies, like most quality college units, can command their audience when playing ahead. Quarterback Zach Calzada had the luxury of working play-action and passed for 187 yards and two touchdowns in the win. However, Calzada missed three open receivers and was just 12 of 24 on his throws.
Aggies junior wideout Ainias Smith returned a 95-yard punt for a touchdown and Jalen Wydermyer led all Texas A&M receivers with 75 yards and two scores. A&M went into intermission with a 31-0 lead and could do anything they wanted when they had the ball in a 44-14 victory over the Gamecocks. Texas A&M was dominant from beginning to end in the October 23rd home field rout over a 4-4 South Carolina crew.
Alabama sits atop the SEC West with a 4-1 mark. Auburn is a half-game back of the Tide with a 3-1 record. Texas A&M, 3-2 in the West, is one game behind with the head-to-head tiebreaker. Needless to write that this Saturday afternoon’s 3:30 pm ET campus contest on CBS means as much as any scheduled league matchup on Saturday’s college slate.
If Texas A&M is to hold serve in College Station, they will get it done with their elite defense. A lot of college football pundits converse with the belief that A&M is still in the CFP conversation due to their win over Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide. The Tigers would have to have one hundred and one things go just right to even sneak into the backdoor of the January Four.
All of the pressure in this SEC Saturday big game is on the home team Aggies, and this makes Nix and his teammates dangerous, Aggie-eating Tigers if you will.

Texas A&M vs Auburn Analysis from The GoldSheet
The “good Bo Nix” is showing up a lot more lately than his Mr. Hyde alter-ego, with the latest example of his recent transformation being a highly-efficient 22-of-30 passing performance in last Saturday’s rousing win over Ole Miss at Jordan-Hare. And even in some of his subpar efforts earlier in the season, Nix has cut down his mistakes under Bryan Harsin, tossing just two interceptions into November. Still, for most of his career, the off-games have generally come on the road, and the Tigers catch a well-rested A&M team off a bye week and three uplifting wins in a row, including vs. then top-ranked Alabama on October 9. Zach Calzada has improved greatly since his shaky introduction to College Station, but he has still tossed a pick in six-straight games and barely completed 50-percent of his throws in recent wins vs. Mizzou and South Carolina. The recent version of Nix, however, has us intrigued as Auburn continues an unlikely march to a possible SEC West showdown in the Iron bowl vs. you-know-who in three weeks.
