Texas Tech College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Counting a 2-0 bowl record, Texas Tech is 15-11 under Joey McGuire. Maybe he’s not getting enough credit?
2024 Texas Tech NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
Last year’s projected starting lineup showed 10 seniors and 10 juniors. They are clearly younger this year, especially at WR, and in the back seven defensively. Overall, there’s just one projected senior starter on the defense. RB Brooks is outstanding.
The OL may slip just a bit, and loses their OL coach. That’s a must watch area. While my projected #’s won’t change much (easier schedule), there’s work to be done defensively, starting with the pass rush, and continuing with the loss of a few key performers. Tim DeRuyter is a highly experienced coordinator, so that might help.
Texas Tech was 5-4 in the Big 12 a year ago, but with just a 218-248 point ratio. The very consistent turnover ratio over the past four years has averaged -7. Improve that area and some points can be made up.
Texas Tech Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
I used to feel (and still feel) that the middle of the ACC is interchangeable. I feel the same way about the newly configured Big 12. That means little things (schedule nuggets, kicking, coaching moves) matter. Those areas are mostly stable with Texas Tech, but the road record has to improve and the younger squad could be more vulnerable, as compared to in ’23.
I think 7.5 is an accurate figure for this team, but I’ll lean 7-5 just a bit more than 8-4. Let’s see if the turnover ratio can improve, which would be a massive help.

2024 Texas Tech Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Texas Tech lost three games when favored, and won just once as a dog, so maybe they didn’t completely overachieve last year? They go 3-0 prior to Big 10 play if they can win at WSU, a game that looks 50-50 to me. 4-1 or 5-0 is entirely possible as the next toughest game is hosting Cincy.
I’ll precheck the young defense prior to their road trip to potentially solid Arizona, who features a notable QB-WR duo. Baylor has been competitive on the road at Texas Tech. That’s an important game, where a win could keep them in the Big 12 race. Road games at TCU and Iowa State follow. Tech is 8-3 SU at home, but just 3-8 on the road.
That needs to change. With Colorado off rest, they ‘could” be dangerous when they travel to Texas Tech on 11/19. There’s plenty to precheck prior to that one, including Tech’s pass rush, and almost all of Colorado’s defensive #’s.
They close at Oklahoma St (tough one) and home to West Virginia, which could be a pretty even affair for Texas Tech.

I’ve done well here (8-2 ATS lately, 17-5 last six seasons). I’m thinking over the total at Arizona 10/5 (over-unders are not part of my historical record), and a SU loss at Iowa State on 11/2.
