Texas vs Baylor Betting Analysis

Friday’s Texas vs Baylor clash in the Big XII features two teams that will likely fall short of goals this season. WagerTalk college football handicapper Kevin Dolan shares his thoughts on this Lone Star State showdown.

The 6-5 Bears from Waco have lost back-to-back contests, including a last-second loss to No. 4 TCU last week. Can head coach Dave Aranda and Co. put that loss to bed, or will it linger into this week’s trip to Austin?

The 7-4 Longhorns still have a path to the conference championship game should they beat Baylor here on Friday, but also need Kansas to do them a favor by beating Kansas State on the road on Saturday.

Texas owns a massive 79-28-4 advantage over the Bears in this series, but Baylor has been much more competitive in recent years with these teams splitting their last 12 games since 2010.

Baylor Almost Crashed The Party

Baylor had every opportunity to knock off the Horned Frogs last week in Waco but couldn’t shut the door. The Bears held a 28-20 lead with less than ten minutes to go.

TCU scored a touchdown but failed to get the two-point conversion, allowing Baylor to maintain a two-point lead. The Bears failed to put the game on ice and TCU kicked the game winning field goal as time expired.

Baylor earned over 500 yards of offense in that contest. Running backs Craig Williams and Richard Reese have been able to help QB Blake Shapen achieve balance on offense.

The metrics suggest that Baylor should be very competitive in this matchup, but what is their mental state after last week’s collapse?

Texas Smashes Kansas

No matter how poor the Jayhawks have looked in recent seasons, Kansas always found a way to play Texas close. Kansas beat the Longhorns in 2016 and 2021, then lost by an average of eight points per game between 2017-2020.

Texas put last week’s contest to bed real quick. The 2022 version of the Jahawks is the best team that they’ve had in over a decade, but the Longhorns dealt them a 55-14 defeat last week to move into the top-20 in points per game.

Texas vs Baylor Prediction

Baylor put in a monumental effort last week against TCU with 46 rushing attempts for an average of 5.0 yards per carry in that game, and yet still found a way to come up short. That level of effort could cost them in this one.

Baylor put up 48 rushing attempts against Oklahoma a few weeks ago in a close win and looked completely flat in their next game against Kansas State, getting demolished 31-3 at home against the Wildcats.

Baylor’s own rushing defense has given up 6.0 yards per carry on the ground over their last three starts, which is in the bottom-third in the nation.

They now face a top-25 rushing team in Texas here on Friday who has averaged 241.3 rushing yards per game over their last three starts (12th nationally) behind the efforts of RB Bijan Robinson.

Take the Texas Longhorns minus the points here on Friday to win and cover at home against the Baylor Bears.

Prediction: Texas Longhorns -8.5
