Texas vs Kansas State Predictions

  • Texas Longhorns -3 vs Kansas State Wildcats
  • Total: 52.5 Points
  • Kansas State is 5-0 against the spread against teams with a losing record.
  • Texas has failed to cover the spread in each of their last six games.
  • The over is 6-0 in the last six games with K-State as an underdog.

The Texas Longhorns (4-7, 2-6 Big 12) and Kansas State Wildcats (7-4, 4-4 Big 12) take the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial turf in Austin, Texas, Friday morning for the 2021 Big 12 Conference regular-season finales for each school.

The enthusiasm in Austin for Hook ’em Horns football isn’t what it was a handful of weeks ago when the Longhorns held a double-digit lead on the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River rivalry only to choke on and cough up a Boomer Sooner bone.

Texas jumped out to a 14-0 edge less than two minutes into the Red River event, owning a 75-yard catch-and-run TD by Worthy on the first play and Bijan Robinson’s 2-yard scoring run after a Longhorn special team blocked punt.

Anyone and everyone watching the rivalry tradition should have known that unknown factors were in place for the Cotton Bowl extravaganza when the random occurrence of a fox sprinting down the field and through the end zone early in the first quarter. All of what was just outlined to you transpired before the Sooners had recorded a first down.

Texas came into the Red River matchup against Oklahoma, ranked 21st in the AP Top-25 poll, while the Sooners were undefeated and ranked 6th. The Longhorns, who were on the back of a three-game stretch of wins since a Week 2 failure against SEC foe Arkansas, had never lost when scoring at least 48 points.

To skip to the meat of the gameday story, the Sooners eventually earned the Red River hardware with a 55-48 victory in the Cotton Bowl. The Sooners stockpiled 662 yards of total offense while the Longhorns totaled 516.

Life in Austin and the Texas Longhorns’ lockerroom have not been the same since. Texas has lost five straight since that October 9th defeat at Lincoln Riley and frosh quarterback Caleb Williams.

Texas has lost six consecutive games in all, falling victim to Oklahoma State, Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas in a 57-56 overtime defeat inside of and on Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium bricks and grass, respectively.

The ‘Horns are injury-riddled, and the current starting eleven on the defensive side of the ball for Texas can’t tackle. The Texas run defense has been porous, all the while giving way to an even less successful defensive secondary. And the offense can’t keep the opposition’s defensive front out of the offensive backfield long enough for head coach Steve Sarkisian to draw up another play to send into his field general Casey Thompson.

Coach Sarkisian and his staff have nothing to sell to the Texas players. A victory won’t allow them to earn a bowl bid, and no money in the world will change hands on Sarkisian watch.

The Longhorns are nothing short of 80-something “walking dead” in Austin on Friday morning. The Kansas State Wildcats have an opportunity to catch the eighth win of the season and improve their bowl standing.

Even without their starting quarterback Skylar Thompson, Kansas State can bulldoze the football every which way but up on the back and in stride with the legs of tailback Deuce Vaughn.

Heartland College Sports published a Preview and Prediction piece through contributor Bryan Clinton, who wrote “Vaughn has been the focal point of the Kansas State offense all season long, and for good reason. The sophomore ranks eighth nationally in all-purpose yards (1,579 yards) and first in the Big 12. He looks like the reincarnation of ex-NFL everything Darren Sproles at Kansas State, and if the Longhorns can’t get him to the ground on the first try, he could be the reason why Texas loses its seventh straight.”

In cooperation with Clinton, the Heartland piece revealed the state of football on the Texas campus and locker room as this post-Turkey Day contest approaches. Clinton added, “The Texas psyche is shattered right now, and sometimes that is a hard thing to move past. Since the second week in October, this team has been broken, and they have shown the tendency to give games away late.”

The seniors currently reside on the roster and have been living in the locker room for four or more years are broken. They are playing their final year under a coach that didn’t recruit them and are on the verge of a seventh straight loss to close their college careers.

It’s Senior Day in Austin on Friday morning and the final game of what is currently a 4-7 season is a tough sell even to the most resilient kid.

Don’t buy the latest portage that the Texas athletic department is attempting to inspire the players with. The AD in Austin sent out a messenger that, by luck that the Longhorns football players didn’t have returned to the office that committed the crime unscathed.

The Texas Athletic Department is suggesting that there is a chance that a 5-7 Texas squad can still be in the Bowl mix for a holiday event that can’t fill a sideline because of the lack of teams with six qualifying season wins.

This is a game that you will want to confirm the playing status of KSU signal-caller Skylar Thompson. If Thompson is cleared to start on Friday, it is “Katie bar the door” because the rush to the sportsbook counter is on.

What is the rush, you ask?

The rush is to get to the bookmakers’ ticket counter and secure an investment in Kansas State and the three points that the Longhorns are handicapping the Wildcats.

Texas vs Kansas State Analysis from The GoldSheet

The current six-game skid is the longest for the Horns since Edwin Price’s UT lost eight in a row to end the ‘56 season and pave the way for Darrell Royal to arrive from Washington and save the program. Compare the flailing around in Austin to the inspired hire at K-State of Chris Klieman to succeed the iconic Bill Snyder, with Klieman having the Cats qualified for the second bowl in as many tries (we aren’t counting last year’s Covid season which strafed the Wildcats).

No shame falling short against 11th-ranked Baylor last week, especially after KSU had won four in a row previous. And the concern about the status of QB Skylar Thompson (carted off last week) mitigated somewhat by fact that soph backup Will Howard has starting experience, including last year vs. Herman’s Longhorns. Besides, the 107th-ranked Texas D looks the most vulnerable platoon on this field, and after a nearly-full season Sarkisian still hasn’t made up his mind on a QB (Hudson Card & Casey Thompson both taking snaps in the loss at Morgantown last week), while neither has top run threat Bijan Robinson (elbow; out for year) to lean on the rest of the season. Is the likely Skylar Thompson absence really enough to justify ice-cold Texas being made a favorite? Play Kansas State.
